July 2, 2021 Gray Lady’s 2nd tiny kitten (Willy’s sibling) LUCY is adorable!  She is very laid back, tamed up easily and she is a beautiful spotted gray tabby short haired.  She is doing well and only a teensy shy.  You can pick her up and handle her.  She was touch and go for a few weeks, but she seems fine now and the vet says she is healthy.  LUCY is going through her series of shots and vet visits.  She tested negative and should be spayed within the next couple of weeks.

  • Hoodie is Adopted!

    Hoodie is Adopted!

June 2021: Good news! Hoodie is adopted!

7-12-2021 Hoodie came to me from a bad part of town in Wilmington called “the Hood”.  She was skinny, alone and going door to door asking for food!  Someone picked her up and took her inside, but could not keep her.  FURR was called and we took Hoodie.  This was a great rescue because Hoodie was extremely grateful and meow’d and purrrrr’d all the time in gratitude!  Hoodie was extremely social right from the beginning and the only thing that I can figure is that she was dumped.
Hoodie became a favorite around FURR and loved to stand up on her hind legs asking to be picked up!  She was super funny and seemed to love everyone:  dogs, people and cats!  There was no doubt that this kitten wouldn’t last long before being adopted.
Again, just like Sake, Hoodie went to good friends of mine in Charlotte that had 2 other FURR cats!  Christine and Mike Wilkins already had adopted from FURR in the past and took my word for it that Hoodie would be a great new addition for their family.  Hoodie was transported to her new home and has been doing great!  Hoodie is loving playing with the Wilkins little girl and being free to run around the house with her new family!  I also miss Hoodie every day!  She was such an amazing little kitty, but all has ended as it should be!

Original story: Absolutely the BEST kitten ever, ever, ever!!! LOVES everybody cats & even our dog! This little girl came from the “hood” in a bad, bad place going door to door looking for FOOD ! A good Samaritan found her & took her inside to keep her safe. She then came to us @ FURR & has been completely vetted, microchipped, etc., and is ready to go her new SAFE lifelong home. I just LOVE this kitten & she is IN YOUR FACE looking for affection! She is AMAZING & new potential owners will be the luckiest folks on earth!!!

  • Sake is Adopted!

    Sake is Adopted!

June 2021: Good news! Sake is Adopted!

7-12-21 SAKE was adopted by my good friend, Bobbi Marr, in Monroe, NC.  Bobbi has adopted SEVERAL FURR cats in the past and had recently lost one of her FURR cats to cancer.  It was a very sad passing, but Bobbi wanted to offer a new life to another rescued kitty.  Bobbi came and stayed with me one weekend and she fell in love with SAKE.
SAKE came to me from Charlotte extremely feral, scared and injured.  She had to have 2 surgeries to correct her prolapsed rectum, but healed up beautifully.  SAKE slowly, but surely, learned how things work at FURR!  She was going to be petted and loved on whether she wanted it or not!  She would also learn to cohabitate with all the other rescued kitties and learn that socialization was a fun thing.  SAKE became ready for adoption after several months of rehab at FURR and everyone just fell in love with her…….including Bobbi!
Bobbi took SAKE home and it was pretty much an instant success.  Bobbi has a lot of experience in introducing cats, being patient with new or frightened cats and reading the cat’s behavior to know when ready to the next step.  SAKE just loves Bobbi, sleeps with her and plays with all the other kitties.  Bobbi tells me how they play and chase each other around the house.  It is just music to my ears that this is such a great home for SAKE.  She is so beautiful and Bobbi is the lucky one that gets to look at her and feel her soft fur every day!  I miss SAKE every day!

Original Story: December of 2020 I received a desperate call from a well-known cat lady named Marilyn. She said that someone had trapped a cat and had brought it to her. The cat was extremely feral and was living behind a Japanese restaurant in Charlotte. Marilyn took the cat in and realized that it had some medical issues. It had a prolapsed rectum! Poor skinny, scared, feral kitty was living a rough life outside AND with a horrible medical issue!

Sake in the trap – Dec 2020

Marilyn got the cat to the vet and they managed to get the rectum back in place, but the kitty, “SAKE”, needed rest, meds, etc……but, Marilyn had trouble handling the cat and she asked me to please take it and work with it. I agreed, but she had trouble trying to get SAKE into a carrier. She had SAKE in her bathroom. Finally SAKE got into the carrier and the trapper drove from Charlotte to bring SAKE to me. I met him about an hour outside of Wilmington and picked her up.

The trapper of the cat was a really nice man and he has stayed in touch with me about SAKE. He told me that he had been the one to trap SAKE, taken her to the vet to get her spayed & to fix her prolapse, but when he went to pick her up after her surgery, she ESCAPED outside!!! She had just had surgery! After two weeks of trying, he was able to trap her again, thank goodness, but he delivered her to Marilyn. Now, she is probably really traumatized.
SO, now I have SAKE. I was very intrigued with this little kitty. She was DROP DEAD GORGEOUS and about a year old. BUT, she was very scared & hissed like crazy! All you had to do was look her way, and she would spit on and hiss at you!

I got SAKE home and I just sort of experimented with her. When I picked her up and held her really snug up against my chest, she kind of settled in. She took a deep breath, hissed a couple of times, but then she was ok with it. I temporarily put her in a cage so that I could handle her often. She warmed up quickly to my touch, my feeding her and to being brushed.

However, during the stress of moving AGAIN to a new place, the rectum prolapsed again! YIKES! I had only had her a few days when this happened again.

I had to rush her to the emergency vet. They had to do surgery this time, put the rectum back in place, stitch her up and put her on some heavy duty antibiotics, etc. She came back to FURR the next day and I had to care for her. She healed up beautifully this time and has had no problems since her 2 week recovery.

SAKE is now running around with all the other cats at FURR. She is very playful and lets me handle her with no problems! She is really sweet and grateful. She purrrrrrs now and rolls around when I am petting her! She really has taken to me, and gets along with the other cats fine, but would probably do just fine also as an only kitty.

SAKE is completely healthy now. She is still shy when meeting new people, but it doesn’t take her long to trust them. All it takes is a little time and patience. She will be a wonderful cat for someone that can be quiet around her and give her time to adjust. She actually looks like a miniature Ragdoll kitty. Her eyes are ridiculously BLUE and her long hair is silky soft. Her coloring is just gorgeous. SAKE will always be a tiny kitty. I doubt she will ever weight must more than 6 or 7 pounds. She is AMAZING and I have just loved working with her!!!

2020 and Prior Years – WHAT A STORY!!! This poor scared kitten was a mama with new borns if her own…..a kitten with kittens. She was doing her best trying to hide them & find enough food to survive when Animal Control was called! Of course mama hid while Animal Control took the new babies and killed all 4 of them within the hour before we could save them, but we did manage to catch mom & save her! This poor terrified kitten (probably 6-8 months old this summer) was so sad and she was starving. FURR has worked hard to get her healthy, fat & happy again!

BREVARD is just beautiful and needs someone to understand her story! Could you be the happy ending to this kitty’s dreams??? Come and meet this amazing survivor & prepare to fall in love with her!!!

Brevard, Labella, Lillie Rae & Socks are doing great and I am loving on them every spare minute.  They are becoming much more social Socks, especially, is just SO HAPPY!  She rolls around, purrs all the time, loves her belly rubs and is happy as can be!
I am picking up Brevard every day and she is getting really used to it!  She LOVES little nibbles of cheese!  Labella & Lillie Rae are both improving rapidly.  I visit them several times a day and just rub & kiss on them!  It is going great! Pinky has been wonderful!  He seems to just LOVE being in the middle of all the craziness of the kittens jumping all over him and he just seems to be going with the flow!  I am hoping I can adopt him out soon!  Hooters is always not far from Pinky and she is super sweet, loving to be petted and scratched! The 3 kittens just had their 2nd booster shots.  and are doing great. Mary just got spayed at the Cape Fear Neuter Clinic.  They did an amazing job!  Chatty Cathy and Persimmon are still just a teensy shy, but really doing very very well!!! I am so thankful for the great adjustment of the cats!

June 14, 2019 Update – Eye Surgery Successful!
The fundraiser for the past two weeks was a quick success, then the eye surgeon had a cancellation and …. Viola! We now have a great photo of Terry with Peek-a-boo today right after surgery!!! Terry reports that all went well and he is doing great! Let’s look forward to more updates soon on how much he is enjoying life – pain free – with his mom and siblings!!

Original Post June 3, 2019 – This kitten is in PAIN!
He is so tiny, but this injury/ulceration on his eye looks horrible. Terry Schultz, FURR’s President, discussed this kitten’s eye with Dr. Moses AND with an animal ophthalmologist (specialist) who confirm the surgery needs to happen ASAP.

    Original Story – June 3, 2019

I received a phone call from a nice couple that adopted a kitty from me years ago. Since then, they had accumulated 3 more rescue kitties. They are the nicest couple and really care about the cats. Recently some stray cats showed up on their back porch, one by one, until there were FOUR strays begging for food. They, of course, were fed & given clean water on the deck.

A couple of weeks later, one of the skinny adult female cats showed up with FOUR kittens! They were tiny and this couple called me about them. It is so upsetting!!!

Every time I would see pictures of the kittens, they looked worse and worse. Between the heat, the fleas/parasites and trying to nurse on an emaciated mom, they really didn’t stand a chance. One of the kittens started looking like it had an infected eye. At that point, I knew that kitten would die from infection. SO, I went out and trapped the mama cat and grabbed the 4 kittens with my hands. I am trying to make arrangements for the other 3 adult cats to be fixed & vetted. They will, unfortunately, have to be released back at the house, but at least they will have food & water and a complete vetting.

I got the 5 rescues on Thursday night and got them to 4 Seasons on Friday morning.

Mom had never, ever been picked up, or handled really, and as scared to death as she was, she just seemed to know that we were trying to help her. She was very good for the exam, blood testing, shots, etc. I was very very proud of her!

The kittens were all examined also. They are between 3-4 weeks old. One is VERY tiny and three are normal size for that age.

One of the normal sized kittens does have to have his left eye removed once he is old enough for surgery. It is so sad and looks horrible. I can’t stand waiting for the surgery while knowing he is in pain, but he is too little right now. His eye has ruptured and must come out. He is a cute little fuzzy buff boy. We will be needing to raise $$$ during that time to pay for his surgery……

Say a prayer for this family that they all make it and end up healthy and happy. The mama cat seems very grateful and I took a picture of her this morning, with a full belly, relaxed and stretched out while she slept! It was a wonderful thing to see!!!

  • Louie’s long shot at survival turns miraculous

LOUIE COMFY AT FURR - FEB 2018
LOUIE COMFY AT FURR – FEB 2018

    Editor’s Note – February 19, 2018:

We are very happy to report that LOUIE is doing great recovering at FURR, so please read his story below from the beginning to the latest chapter knowing there is a happy chapter next. We are also immensely grateful to many people named herein for his veterinary care. We also thank those who helped raise all the funds needed for his treatment.

He needs more time before he is ready for adoption. So for now we are just telling his amazing story. Please check back again soon for more updates in his amazing survival and recovery.

    LOUIE’S Story begins January 17, 2018

Last weekend while I was out of town and a friend of mine called about a feral cat that would show up at the edge of the woods behind her house.  She said she had seen the cat a couple of times, but then it would disappear for a week or so.  This past weekend she saw the cat again and she could clearly see that it was injured…….badly injured.  The cat was literally dragging its hind leg.

I asked my friend to put out some food and water for the cat to keep him close by and to get one of my traps.  She got the trap, baited it the next day and the cat went in!!!  When I got the call Saturday afternoon that he was captured, but we could not find ANY vet anywhere to see it.  The cat looked pretty bad so I told her just to go ahead to the animal ER.  It was literally a matter of life and death.

This cat had been captured before and TNR’d (trapped, neutered & released) because he was already neutered & had a tipped ear….but, as important as it is to spay & neuter our outdoor cats, this is a prime example of what can happen to them and why their life span is only 5 years on average as compared to 18 years as an inside cat.

The cat had a horrible injury to his left hind leg.  It appeared, according to the ER vet, that a coyote, dog or some other predator, had bitten the cat’s leg in the upper thigh and somehow the cat got away leaving the cat with a horrible bite wound and all the skin pulled off of his hind leg.

The ER vet said the cat was emaciated, very very anemic, severely injured and dehydrated (that is in addition to the parasites, FIV+ status and just overall poor condition).  They wanted to keep the cat overnight to monitor it, give it pain medicine, antibiotics and fluids.  It was terrible.  When I saw the picture that the ER vet took of his leg, I had my doubts about prolonging this cat’s agony, but the ER vet assured me that after having a pain patch put on the cat’s back, he would no longer be in any pain.

On Sunday, the leg had been cleaned and wrapped.  The ER vet said it will most definitely need amputation, but that the cat was not strong or healthy enough for surgery.  He would need daily care, leg washing, rewrapping, antibiotics, nutrition, fluids. etc. for about a week before he could withstand surgery.

My friend picked him up and kindly put him in her bathroom until I could get him on Monday to transfer him to Dr. Moses.

On Monday I picked the cat up.  I had decided to name him “LOUIE” after the amazing true story of Louie Zamperini (see the movie “UNBROKEN”)………

Dr. Moses and her staff were amazing.  Dr. Moses seemed determined to do everything possible to save LOUIE’S leg, although there are no guarantees.  She took him in, cleaned the leg, re-wrapped it and said he needed at least a week stay in the hospital.  After a week of daily vet care, we will know a lot more.  Will this cat survive?  Can his leg be saved?  It is totally touch and go, but as of the first day at Four Seasons Cat Hospital, Dr. Moses is very pleased.  LOUIE is eating, pooping, peeing and actually standing a little bit on his leg even though it is wrapped up & he has to wear the cone of shame!

I am very moved by this cat’s story.  The fact that he had been living in the woods for weeks with this type of horrific injury is unimaginable.  I am determined to save him.  We can’t do that without help!  LOUIE will have some enormous bills whether or not the leg has to be amputated.

So far we have spent about $900 at the ER Vet. I would anticipate another $1500-$2000 in bills for this kitty. PLEASE PASS ALONG THE WORD THAT WE DESPERATELY NEED DONATIONS FOR LOUIE!!! We have some amazing supporters that give us a LOT, but in cases like this, we do not have the funds in our normal balance to cover such as this and we are reaching out

LOUIE - WRAPPED UP WHILE EATING - FEB 2018
LOUIE – WRAPPED UP WHILE EATING – FEB 2018

to EVERYONE that may be able to help.

MANY THANKS TO THE ER VET IN STALLINGS & TO OUR WONDERFUL VET DR. MOSES AT FOUR SEASONS CAT HOSPITAL!!!

    LOUIE Update January 23, 2018

LOUIE is still at Four Seasons Cat Hospital under the care of our FANTASTIC vet, Dr. Moses!  Every day LOUIE’S leg is getting cleaned, wrapped and cared for.    They are using hydro therapy and physical therapy on his leg and there has actually been a HUGE improvement!  This news is really good because the prognosis of him being able to keep his leg is now a real possibility!!!  Dr. Moses has been working with LOUIE to get his leg to start bending.  It was literally “frozen” in place, not only from the atrophy but probably also due to the frigid weather that he had to endure while dragging this leg behind him.  The leg was frozen in more ways than one.

The pictures I am going to attach show how much he has improved.  LOUIE is also being very cooperative with all the hands-on care.  They have had to sedate him at times while working on the leg due to the extensive pain, but they are managing his pain levels, he is on antibiotics and he is eating, drinking, pooping and peeing just fine!  This is a huge relief!  All the other body parts seem to be doing well!!!

Today, LOUIE actually DID have surgery.  Dr Moses closed in some of the skin to try to get it to heal together and she actually did some “hair plugs” that were removed from his back and implanted into his leg where there is no hair.  The plugs (like grass plugs, I suppose!) will take hold and also help to fill in the bald spots on his leg.

This cat has really been through it!  Thank GOD my dear friend Bobbi Marr trapped him for me while I was out of town.  She basically saved his life because he could not have possibly lasted much longer in the condition he was in.  I cannot even fathom the pain and agony this cat must have gone through.

Thank you all again for the donations to help LOUIE.  This type of emergency can really be expensive, but with everyone’s help (and Dr. Moses’ very generous discounts to us), hopefully we can pay his bill!!!

     LOUIE’S update February 5, 2018

LOUIE IS AT HOME AT FURR!!! LOUIE came home to FURR last night after TWO weeks in the hospital at Four Seasons Cat Hospital.  He is doing ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!!  FURR is so very very grateful to Dr. Moses and her staff for saving LOUIE’s life AND his leg!!!  After two weeks of care, wrapping, treatment, good nutrition, SURGERY and love, this kitty is going to be ok!!!  Dr. Moses has saved his LEG!!!  UNBELIEVABLE!

When we picked up LOUIE from the emergency clinic, it was noted that there did not look like there was any way to save his poor leg which was in horrid condition.  Dr. Moses had other ideas!  She believed that with the proper treatment, therapy and surgery to re-attach what skin she could, that there was a very good possibility of saving his leg…….and she was right!

Last night the staff at Four Seasons showed me how to continue his care and the wrapping of his leg, which I have to do every afternoon.

Thanks you TRACIE, JANET & JOAN for your help wrapping his leg, as it certainly is easier with 2 people!!!  As long as someone is at the front end of LOUIE giving him yummy soupy food to eat (thank you Dr. Moses & staff!), he is so enthralled in his food consumption, that he really doesn’t pay much attention to what I’m doing to his leg!  He does get a little wiggly, but TRACIE did great today helping me get it done!

This cat is AMAZING in every way!  A feral (TNR……trapped/neutered/released) cat, that was living in the woods in pain, starving to death AND in the middle of the FRIGID weather, has now become a total HAM!  When he sees someone coming, he starts meowing, purring, rolling over and stretching and just can’t wait for some love!  The Four Seasons Cat Hospital staff went on and on about what a sweet boy he had become and they all fell in love with him!

Do you think that the warmth of a safe & cozy place to stay, lots of food for a full belly, pain meds and the ultimate care could have influenced him???  I certainly do!!!

This cat is a total miracle.  He should have died.  Thank you to my good friend Bobbi Marr for calling me about him.  Bobbi, following my every instruction, trapped him and took him to the animal ER.  If she had not taken it upon herself to help out (I was out of town), this cat would surely be dead.

There are soooo many people to thank!

Our donors have been UNBELIEVABLE!  We have now generated enough money to pay ALL of LOUIE’S bills!  Thank you from the bottom of my heart!  You all are the most kind and wonderful people on the earth!

THANK YOU BOBBI FOR SAVING HIM!

THANK YOU STALLINGS ER FOR HELPING HIM SURVIVE THE WEEKEND!

THANK YOU DR. MOSES FOR SAVING HIS LEG & HIS LIFE!

THANK YOU FOUR SEASONS CAT HOSPITAL FOR YOUR UNBELIEVABLE LOVE & COMPASSION WHILE CARING FOR HIM!

THANK YOU DONORS & SUPPORTERS THAT HEARD OUR PLEA FOR LOUIE & PAID HIS HOSPITAL BILLS!!!

This cat will be a conversation piece, at the very least, for the lucky person or family that adopts him!!!
