This precious kitty, Yardley, was DUMPED at a scrap yard & FURR rescued her! What a great rescue! This sweet & docile little girl is so easy going. She loves all the other cats & is a favorite at our rescue. She is such a unique-looking tabby girl with all her crazy spots & stripes….quite soft & beautiful! At only a year old, she still plays like a kitten. She is ready for a new adventure with a family of her own. Pleeeease come and meet her! You will fall in love! March 12, 2025 Great news! Scrappy (male, black) has been adopted! This sweeeeet boy was DUMPED at scrap yard along with his sister. He was skinny and didn’t really know what was happening to him, but he (and his sister) was rescued by FURR!
SCRAPPY quickly became a favorite lover boy at our rescue. He was so gentle and kind even though he was unsure about his future. He trusted us and became a gorgeous, shiny golden eyed boy!

Her long-term roommate has an orange male kitty the exact same age as Scrappy! Gradually they will meet and hopefully be able to play together! Right now Scrappy is making air biscuits, purring up a storm and loving all the attention he is getting! HOORAY for a black cat adoption!!!

She met the man that owns it and took some food for the poor skinny cats. There is a mama cat, 2 male cats and 2 kittens.
With Kristy’s help, we trapped the 2 kittens and took them to the Cape Fear S/N clinic last week. My intention was to get them fixed, shots, etc., and release them again. However, the kittens are young and sooo skinny! They are about 10-12 weeks old. I have had them recovering at my feral cat sanctuary.
The 2 kittens are “Yardley”, a female Domestic Short Hair gray tabby, and “Scrappy”, a male Domestic Short Hair with black fur.
They started out scared to death and eyes bigger than saucers. Now, a week later, they seem glad to see me, I’m petting and holding both of them and they are purring! They will be moved up to the house, and join Connor, after quarantine.
Another rescue group is helping me TNR the mama and other 2 male cats. The sad part is that the mama tabby is really skittish, but wants love. She could easily be tamed and adopted out, but I just don’t have any room at this time.

April 2026 If you’ve ever wondered whether helping a feral cat is worth it, we hope Bruiser’s story shows you that it absolutely is!
Bruiser’s Mom tells his amazing rescue and rehabilitation story below, so even though he’s safe and sounds and in his “FURR-ever” home, it’s important to people to understand that his experiences are typical of what feral cats endure and how rewarding their rescue and rehabilitation is!

Bruiser’s Story For several years, Bruiser was “the feral cat” in our neighborhood—the one you’d see wandering through, but could never get close to. Even when food was offered, he wasn’t interested. I could run outside with a bowl, and he’d be gone in a flash. Humans? Not his thing.
Everything changed one summer day when we spotted him perched on the edge of our above-ground pool, desperately drinking water. Out of concern, we set out a bowl of fresh water. He drank. Then we put out food—and he ate. Slowly, cautiously, Bruiser began coming around more regularly.
That’s when we reached out to Terri at FURR. Our original plan was simple: get him neutered and vetted so he could be our “outside kitty” safer and healthier. But of course… Murphy’s Law. Bruiser disappeared for a month and we were pretty bummed,thinking we’d missed our chance.
Then one day—he was back. Terri kindly loaned us a trap and crate to help with TNR (Trap-Neuter-Release) and urged us to consider bringing him inside. We were hesitant. We already had two indoor cats, and Bruiser was very feral. When a potential hurricane was forecasted in September, we knew that time was of the essence to get him in from outside.
We trapped him on the first try—success! Terri arranged his appointment at the spay/neuter clinic, and Bruiser came home fully vetted. We learned he was about four years old and FIV-positive* (a manageable, but incurable, disease – see “What to know about FIV” below). Terri reassured us that with proper care and supervision, our other cats would be just fine.
Working with a true feral adult was new territory for us. Even though we’ve had cats all our lives, this was different. Terri was incredible—always there with advice, reassurance, and step-by-step guidance. We checked in often, sometimes with questions – sharing photos and videos of our real-time progress and struggles, and sometimes just needing encouragement.
Progress wasn’t always obvious, and there were moments when it felt like we’d hit a wall. But we learned that slow steps, patience, and consistency really do matter. Trust began to grow.
And then… something amazing happened. In just two months, Bruiser went from a tough outdoor “bruiser” to a total schmoozer. Many swats, a couple of bites (and yes, a little blood) later—we were petting him, he was rubbing on us and purring. We never thought a truly feral adult cat could become a happy, affectionate part of a family—but once they feel safe and experience love, anything is possible.
Is everything perfect? Not quite yet. Our calico with catitude, Sophia, still hisses when he gets too close, Bruiser occasionally chases Sophia and Punk’n. Food aggression is definitely a thing with him, so we feed him separately to ensure the other kitties can enjoy their meals in peace. But there haven’t been any major issues, and things continue to improve every day.
He’s now fully part of our household, but most importantly, Bruiser is now part of our family – safe, loved, and no longer struggling to survive outdoors. We’re so grateful we listened to Terri and trusted the process.
Here are the key consideration that FURR goes by to caring for and adopting out FIV+ kitties:
Adopters should have no concerns in adopting an FIV+ kitty at all. In fact, I may stop testing for FIV & just test for FeLV.
FIV+ cats can live simultaneously with non FIV+ cats with no problem. FIV+ cats cannot spread FIV unless there is severe fighting and lots of blood exchange.
FIV is predominantly spread through breeding for passing or from an FIV+ mom to her kittens, but it is considered rare, and many kittens with a positive test actually only have maternal antibodies rather than the infection. Kittens with positive results should be retested after 6 months to confirm their status, as they often turn negative once maternal antibodies disappear.
Once the cat is spayed/neutered, the breeding stops, which helps prevent the disease from spreading.
Since the immune system of an FIV+ cat is somewhat compromised, FIV+ cats should stay indoors and safe from other cats that may have Upper Respiratory Infection and/or compromised immune system. This is why we adopt to indoor only homes anyway.
Our known FIV+ cats at FURR live with all the other cats and are treated and adopted out just the same.

December 12, 2024 Both “Cocoa”, a 6-8 month old black female, and “Rocky”, a 2 year old gray tabby male, are now fixed, microchipped, shots, blood tested, etc. Now all they need is time and patience to get them ready for an indoor homes. Watch their video!
We would GREATLY appreciate anyone foster home for these two since we have no where to put them but in a small cage. Both are healthy, beautiful and progressing nicely.

November 28, 2024 I successfully caught 2 feral cats early Tues am in Holly Ridge! My realtor called me because she was moving and had been feeding them. She didn’t want to just leave them behind.
I took traps to her and showed her how to set them up. The traps were left open for about a week and she fed them inside the traps to get them used to it. Tues morning early I caught them, just as planned and took them to the S/N clinic in Castle Hayne.
FURR now has “Cocoa”, a 6-8 month old black female, and “Rocky”, a 2 year old gray tabby male who has a raccoon-looking tail like the cartoon character “Rocky Racoon”.

My realtor had hoped to keep them at her house for recovery and I loaned her a cage, but trying to take care of these kitties and moving at the same time understandably became overwhelming! So these cats are now at the FURR Sanctuary recovering from their surgery and traumatic day! They are both beautiful and I’m at least relieved that they are safe.

April 13, 2026FLOUNDER is doing great! Latest photo above! I took him to the vet this past week (along with several other cat visits to Sound Cat!) and repeated his PCR test (swab eyes & back of throat). He was a trooper & no sedation needed. I just held him & he knew I was with him. He has really come a long long way from being VERY feral to just a “mushster”!
Will take a few days to get the results, but hoping PCR will show that he is not contagious any more for the calici virus (Kitty pneumonia) which is contagious. It is much less contagious to cats that are vaccinated & all of ours have been, but airing on the side of caution. Just cant wait to get him out of that bathroom he has been locked up in for EIGHT weeks!

March 8, 2026 Update on Flounder – Its been a challenge & very, very slow improvement, but I can finally say, I am hopeful, as you can see in his latest video.
A couple days ago, FLOUNDER began nibbling a little bit on his dry food. He is also drinking a little water on his own.
Yesterday, he took a brief moment to pick his paw.
Today, he was purring & that made me cry. After 11 days of tube feeding this kitty 3 times a day while his eyes were closed, he just laid there with his head buried, I’m finally seeing some improvement.

Flounder is the little black feral I took to Sound Cat last Monday & had all his teeth pulled (to the tune of $1,700!!!), but unfortunately, he has not done well so far.
I dropped him off at Sound Cat, our Vet, this am. He is not eating, he is very lethargic & quite congested.
Please say a prayer for this little feral cat. He doesn’t deserve any of this!
Feb. 15, 2026 Urgent Fundraiser needed for poor Flounder’s dental issues! For the fast couple of weeks, I noticed him, one of the black feral kitties in the FURR Sanctuary, seemed thin, lethargic and not well.
I noticed that Flounder started to seem congested also, so I had to get him to the vet. After several days, I finally got Flounder in my net and got him to Sound Cat. It is so difficult to care for a feral colony because the cats are not tame. It is extremely difficult to catch them.

Flounder had horrible breath, horrible teeth and needs a full mouth of dental extractions! He also had a horrible infection and was dripping bloody mucus from his nose as you can see in this photo. How painful and horrible for him!
He is scheduled for dental surgery on Feb. 16. It will cost around $1,200 – $1,500 for him in addition to the $300 I’ve already spent from his original vet assessment last week.
Since Flounder’s surgery moved up, that opened a dental surgery spot for the new feral, TREASURE, on Mar 30th.
Please say a prayer that Flounder’s surgery goes well and that all of his infections will go away. Poor kitty!!!

When we rescued him, he had a horrible mouth and needed teeth pulled, and so now thankfully had successful dental surgery in July 2024. Salmon has also recovered from a severe UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) earlier this year and spending time in the hospital. He is now on special food now and enjoying life in the FURR adoptable kitties house.
He has come a long way behaviorally as well since his initial rescue has really begun to trust us & now loves scratches and rubs! He blinks his eyes in content especially when getting scratched right in front of his tail!
This BEAUTIFUL buff kitty is ready for adoption! He is only a couple years young and is a kind soul. He loves the other kitties too.
So glad Salmon is improving every day and enjoying his life!

July 31, 2025 It is with the heaviest heart that I bring you the sad news that TUX went over the rainbow bridge today. I held him in my arms & soaked his head with tears as Dr. Gervais, (Sound Cat) gently and kindly, helped TUX exit our world.
This truly amazing cat was a FURR favorite. I trapped him on the FURR property. He showed up starving, skinny & very feral. It took me about 2 weeks to get him in a trap.
During his exam, neuter, shots, deworming, etc., it appeared that he had been hit by a car. He had a limp and sat a little sideways. An x-ray showed that he had suffered a broken pelvis (that had healed on its own) and he had kidney damage.
With a lot of love, food & simple vitamins, TUX became SUPER happy and sweet! He gained weight & had several followup visits to the vet to monitor his kidney functions.
Everything was going great until 2 days ago. TUX stopped eating, became very quiet & sat with his head facing away from us.
I knew right away that things had taken a turn for the worst.
This am early I took him to Sound Cat for an emergency visit. His bloodwork showed that his kidneys had completely shut down. His numbers were off the chart. I knew he was feeling bad. The news wasn’t good and there is nothing that can be done for a cat when kidneys give up.
I am so thankful for Dr. Gervais. She eased my pain and said this was the only choice.
I have literally cried all day. I am going to miss this remarkable cat so much. He was extremely special and im so sorry his time on this earth was cut short. I will always love him. He was only 4 or 5 years old.

December 24, 2024 Took sweet TUX to the vet this am. He’s having a rough time. With his broken pelvis and injury to his kidneys, probably from being hit by a car, he is a “special needs kitty” who needs medicine and maintenance for the rest of his life.
The good news is that he doesn’t know there’s anything wrong! He gets around just like all the other kitties and is easy to medicate. His medications help address the kidney damage from his injuries, but the meds are not expensive at all. He takes whatever you need to give him – no problem! What a great sport!
More importantly, TUX is just the sweetest cat you could ever meet! It’s so unfair that he had to begin his young life homeless and injured. He loves to rub on your legs and be petted and held. The vet says he’s around 6 years old and there is every reason to hope that he’ll have a long and happy life just like any other kitty. Best of all, he gives TONS of love in return to the extra care he needs. Everyone wins!
We hope and pray that a caring person will come along and adopt him for his amazing personality, knowing his misfortune, and will love him all the more!
October 17, 2024 Watch his new video! TUX is doing well in his large holding pen at the sanctuary. This poor cat is skin & bones, but for a week now he is eating and drinking everything i put in front of him! He must have been starving.
TUX has been easy to care for & although he is scared and timid, I have been able to pet & stroke him without incident.
This is good and bad! I am completely full at FURR, but i know if I release TUX into the sanctuary, I won’t be able to work with him every day.
He really seems like he wants love and he is a young cat around 2 -4 years old.

October 9, 2024 So a cat has been seen running by my sanctuary in the evenings. I’ve been putting food & water out for it. The cat seemed pretty feral, was VERY skinny and I knew I had to help him.
At first I thought he was black and could be one of my missing ferals! However, when I finally got a good look at him on my outside cameras, I could see that he did not have a tipped ear & he was actually a Tuxedo (white belly, chest & paws).
I was able to humanely trap him last night and I took him to the S/N clinic today.
He is, in fact, a boy (not neutered), very thin, covered in fleas, no collar and no microchip. He hissed at me several times showing his disapproval of the events of the day!
But now, he has settled in his large recovery cage (large chicken coop) and is resting.
Calling him “Tux” since he will be the only tuxedo in the sanctuary…..as bad as that name is!
Tux tested negative for FIV & FeLV & HW and is now neutered, had all his shots, is microchipped, dewormed and treated for fleas.
