  • Jay is enjoying his new home

    Jay - late 2017
    Jay – late 2017
    Jay late 2017 - 2
    Jay late 2017 – 2

In Late 2017, JAY got adopted by a wonderful couple and also lives with a little miniature Schnauser doggie. The couple, dog & JAY are all doing great!

Four Kittens Rescued in Monroe, NC November 2017

A friend of mine called when trapping cats on a terrible street in Monroe……she was trying to get as many “fixed” as she could and get them rabies shots. The street is a poor street, dirty houses and abused animals everywhere. She is working hard to put a dent in the cruelty.

While she was out there trapping, she heard some awful screaming coming from underneath one of the houses. When she knocked on the door, the lady that answered said that there were kittens under there. The kittens had been there for about a week with no mama because she was hit and killed in the street………dear GOD!

My friend called me immediately and said she had gotten permission to get the kittens out from underneath the house and could I please take them. I agreed and even though it was getting late into the evening, I told her to bring them over no matter how late it was.

The kittens looked like they should have been dead. They looked like little baby birds with just skeletons barely covered with fur. They were completely starved and there was no way to know if they would make it. Of course they were immediately fed, bathed (covered in fleas), put on a heating pad and loved. These kittens were the worse case I had ever seen. You would just cry looking at them.

Over time, one of them did pass away. It is heart breaking when you do everything possible to save them……..staying up all night feeding them, keeping them warm, keeping them clean, etc. It sometimes is just out of our hands, but boy does that hurt………hurts deep.

The kittens were named after birds: Robin, Finch, Sparrow & Jay. ROBIN passed away at the ER. It was my second trip to the ER with him. He just lost the will to live and they call it “fading kitten syndrome”. I had him cremated and his little box with his picture is at our rescue facility.

The other three kittens, Finch, Sparrow and Jay are holding on. They have been through a rough time with extreme diarrhea, NOT eating, worms, fleas, etc. They are cured now from all of those things, but now at 7 weeks old, they still don’t want anything to eat but formula, they just barely nibble on their canned food. All I want is for these babies to grow up strong and get a wonderful home where they will be loved, and loved, and loved!!!

Tinker and new Mom Kathleen - April 2018
Tinker and new Mom Kathleen – April 2018

Tinker is Adopted in April 2018!

On another wonderful “KATHLEEN” note, her recent adoption of our beloved TINKER is going fantastic! The reports and pictures that she has sent me are amazing! KATHLEEN has another FURR kitty that she adopted years ago named, “Chocolate Mousse”, and she also has a rescued kitty about 1-2 years old. Both of her cats have welcomed TINKER into their home and it is going extremely well! The cats are all getting along, playing, eating together and having fun! Look at these great pictures she sent to me!

We miss TINKER at the lodge SOOOO much! He was a favorite & so kind and sweet. But, if you remember, when we saved TINKER, he was so skinny & afraid! We certainly transformed him into the amazing cat that we knew he could be and I was SHOCKED the day KATHLEEN told me that she wanted to adopt him! I was thrilled, but knew that she already had 2 kitties……………so, what a happy day I had when she told me she wanted him!

KATHLEEN is calling him “KNUFFEL” which is adorable and means “cuddly” in Dutch! Get out! How cute!

    Tinker’s Story

GORGEOUS RUSSIAN BLUE mix, teenager, male, very very very loving & sweet! Loves to be petted, held, brushed and just melts with attention! TINKER is just a kind, docile kitty. He is laid back, but does love to play with our other FURR kitties. TINKER would be ok alone as a single kitty, or he would be fine with friends. This kitty is fully vetted, all shots, neutered & tested (negative for feline aids/leukemia/heart worm disease). I know he will not last long at FURR. So many people just LOVE the soft, silky coat on the Russian Blue type kitties! Come and meet TINKER soon! You will fall in love!!! FURR adopts to approved homes only in the Charlotte and surrounding area.

    Ellis is Ever-Ready to Play

Ellis in cat tree in new home - Feb 2018
Ellis in cat tree in new home – Feb 2018

    Ellis adopted – Feb 2018!

Ellis now lives in a safe indoor home with a loving family committed to his long-term health & safety! We are all so happy for Ellis & his new family!

FURR is so happy to save this kitty! Ellis surely would have died at A/C & was sooo lucky he didnt die before that. Between the farmer trying to get rid of him & all the other perils he managed to escape (coyotes, cars, starvation, parasites, viral diseases, heart worm disease, etc.), he is one lucky kitty!

    What an amazing cat!!!

We ALL wanted to take him home! He is one in a million!

    Ellis’s Story

FLASHY SNOWSHOE KITTY!!! This drop dead gorgeous cat was rescued off of a farm where he had been living (lost!) for almost 2 months! The call came from a FURR volunteer a few weeks ago. A friend had told her that a beautiful cat had been trapped by a farmer & dropped off at the Waxhaw police dept.

I called the police & went over with my microchip scanner to see if the cat belonged to anyone. I was trying to stop the police from going straight to animal control with the cat. I know that A/C is “supposed” to hold the cat for a couple of days…..but i also know that sometimes they get put down before that AND if no one claims the cat, it will be euthanized.

The farmer said the cat had been hanging around his farm for about 6 weeks or so. He told me (I called & talked to him) that the cat was stealing his outdoor cat’s food. The farmer had been trying to scare off the cat for weeks by throwing rocks at him, but to no avail. The cat continued to be hungry & sneak cat food.

Finally the farmer got a trap to catch & get rid of the cat for good.

I talked the police dept into letting me keep him safe at my rescue while they searched & posted for the owner. The cat was covered in fleas, had visible tape worms, was very thin and was starving. I got him into isolation at FURR & proceded to care for him.

The owner did call finally & said the cat had been missing for weeks. She said that he does that often, since he is an outdoor cat, but usually comes back after a week or two……she had already figured he was gone for good this time. I asked her to relinquish him to FURR so that we could get him healthy & find him a loving, indoor home. It’s not like he really even had a home, wandering dangerously for weeks at a time. She agreed.

Ellis, as he was called, LOVED the food, attention & safe environment that FURR provided! The amazingly beautiful cat didn’t stay long before getting adopted!

  • Stormie Survives the Storm Drains

    Stormie Survives the Storm Drains

    ADOPTED Oct. 5, 2017
Doing great with 2 little girls loving her every day!!! Lives with a very nice family & well loved!!!

    Stormie’s Story

After 3 days of being on a stake out at the Lowe’s in Waxhaw, I (Terry) just rescued a kitten!  Kerri Pyne called me about a little black kitten that had been hit by a car on Hwy. 16 right in front of Lowe’s. I quickly grabbed all my gear & rushed right over.  It was 10 pm & we saw the kitten near the garden center of Lowes, but it was obviously hurt. It was still able to run from us and I was finally able to sneak up on it.  Kerri kept an eye on it in the bushes as it seemed to just collapse.  I got within a few feet of it with a bowl of tuna, but just when I was about to make my move, it ran again & unfortunately jumped down into a storm drain … that’s bad.

The tunnel system connecting those storm drains is never ending, and being injured (appeared to be hind leg), it probably would not be able to get out. I went home & got a kitten trap. Then I asked two guys from the Wal-Mart Foods to help me get the heavy grate off of the drain where the kitten went down (Lowe’s was already closed by now). After 3 days of baiting 2 traps in storm drains, I finally got “her”!!!

THANKS so much to my friend Donna Yankaglu for bringing me a 2nd trap & helping me keep watch.  Thanks so much to Kerri for calling me to help and for also spending her time helping keep watch. Kerri was the one little enough to climb down into the storm drains & look through the tunnels, although she never saw the kitten (being black probably didn’t help!) When she went into the trap just about an hour ago, she was so hungry that she ate all the tuna on the piece of cardboard in the trap AND she ate the cardboard as well – every scrap of it!  That poor injured starving baby!!! She’s pretty wild and I had to scruff her good (while she was trying to bite me) to get the flea stuff on her, but after I had given her 2 cans of kitten Fancy Feast, I was able to gain her trust a little bit & gently stroke her.  She also responded to my voice & blinking eyes.

She will go straight to Dr. Moses tomorrow for her expert vet care.  I think I’ll call her “Stormie” since I have spent the last 3 days and nights down in storm drains! I am so grateful that God answered our prayers to save her.  The rain is coming this weekend and I was afraid she would drown.

    Update – Oct. 23, 2017
Dr. Moses, the FURR vet, helped me take care of her and put her hing leg in a sling for 10 days to see if it would stay in place.  Unfortunately, when the bandage came off, the hip slipped right back out of joint. Dr. Moses said that STORMIE would need surgery on the leg, but that she would like to refer me to an orthopedic surgeon.  I was definitely wanting to do whatever was needed for this kitten, but cost was definitely a concern.  Dr. Moses called a surgeon (that normally does NOT work with rescue groups at all) and she asked him to help us.  Thanks to Dr. Moses, the surgeon agreed to help us and discounted a regularly priced dislocated hip surgery from $2,800 to $1,000. We are so grateful to Dr Moses AND to the surgeon that helped us, but still, for FURR $1,000 was a huge amount.  We certainly did appreciate having that $450 from the yard sale, but now we are pretty much broke again!

Would you like to donate towards STORMIE’s surgery and help FURR recover from the cost?  Click on ‘Donate’ on the right – it’s fast and secure! Thanks!

The surgery went without a hitch!  STORMIE was the best patient.
She stayed in her cage after surgery (AND getting spayed) and she was so patient.  Today (Oct. 23, 2017) was her day of freedom!  She zipped out of her cage and ran around just fine!  She uses her leg some of the time, but that will get better.  Her injured leg is a teeny shorter than her other leg, but, HELLO!!!  She has a leg!!!
We just love STORMIE!  I’m so happy she was rescued!  Thanks again to Kerri Pyne and Donna Yankaglu for helping me on some of the stakeouts!  It was well worth it!

Fern – Fearless, Fabulous – and now Adopted!

Update 11/11/2017: – Fern is Adopted!

Although the beautiful FERN did not work out at her original adopter’s home, FURR took her back and was determined to find her the PURRFECT home this time.  Sometimes, not often, it just does not turn out to be a good match for kitty and adopter.  BUT, a NEW home was found!  One of our newer Kitty Happy Hour volunteers, PAM OPALKA fell in love with FERN and looked forward to visiting her every week.  PAM brushed FERN and talked to her and developed a relationship with her.

I knew PAM was thinking about getting a kitty, since sadly losing one recently, but I never thought it would be FERN!  What a wonderful surprise when she told me that it was FERN that she wanted!  She was adamant about making sure FERN would have the best home ever with lots of love, attention and brushing.  It sounded wonderful and FERN would be the only kitty.  PAM, being retired and living at Sun City, would have lots of time to work with FERN.  She is determined to make sure FERN is happy and loved!

I am thrilled about the re-homing for FERN!  I remember how adorable she was when Debbie Pope and I trapped her along with all the other colony cats at the closed down produce/plant stand in Monroe.  Here are some pictures of her!  She is amazingly beautiful!!! THANK YOU PAM for giving FERN a new home!!!

    Original story:

This sweet girl is FREAKIN’ ADORABLE with her fuzzy black fur and white accents! Watch her video! Look at those whiskers!!! Look at her unique markings on her face! She is soooo soft and sweet!

Fern, and her sister Myrtle, were rescued from an abandoned shopping center and were just skin & bones when FURR saved them! She is such a GORGEOUS cat, long hair and really sweet! She is ready to be loved and is so grateful for the slightest amount of attention! Be the one to give her a better life and realize how lucky you would be to have her. Come and meet her and see for yourself how SPECIAL she really is!

  • Girlfriend is Gorgeous

    Girlfriend is Gorgeous

    ADOPTED in January 2018!

The wonderful, incredible lady named “Linda” that adopted our rescued kitty “BOYFRIEND” called to say she was coming to visit. She lives in OHIO and if you remember, Kathleen one of our very devoted & long time volunteers…….who is also a flight attendant), kindly flew BOYFRIEND to OHIO AND drove him to meet Linda. BOYFRIEND has turned out to be the love of Linda & her husband’s life, but Linda occasionally asked about GIRLFRIEND, the kitty that was rescued with BOYFRIEND. We still had GIRLFRIEND here at FURR. She was pregnant when we saved her and she ultimately had kittens. GIRLFRIEND was so emaciated that she could barely produce enough milk for her babies. We took the best care of her that we could, and thankfully all of the babies made it. They were all absolutely gorgeous and have since all been adopted to wonderful homes.

GIRLFRIEND’s babies were: CASHMERE, CHIFFON, CASANOVA & CHENILLE.

Linda said that she wanted to meet me and come to FURR while in town. Se said that she definitely wanted to meet GIRLFRIEND. I explained to Linda that GIRLFRIEND was drop dead gorgeous, but she was still very shy and scared. We could love on her, pet her, brush her and love on her, but she would still occasionally hiss (for no good reason) and she was very scared of being picked up. Linda wanted to meet the kitty that BOYFRIEND loved at one time!!!

BOYFRIEND is a whole other story for me to tell…….he is doing fantastic and besides being the love of their lives, he has actually done some miraculous things that make him even more special than we ever thought possible!!!

Linda met me and GIRLFRIEND – Linda is sooooo much like me! She is so emotional about the cats and can really feel for their thoughts and look deep into their hearts. Linda just loved petting GIRLFRIEND and enjoyed spending time soothing her and petting her. She fell in love with her! The next thing I knew, she said that she wanted to take her home to OHIO and let her live with and be with BOYFRIEND again! OMG!!!

We started working on the plans, and Linda wanted to fly her home the next day when she was returning to OH. I was such an emotional wreck knowing that GIRLFRIEND was leaving AND that she was going to be on a plane!!! …………but, knowing her ultimate home was absolutely wonderful and a dream come true, I knew it just had to work out!!! Praying to GOD that all goes well, I called Kathleen who is experienced with this “cat flying” stuff! Kathleen assured me and Linda that all would be ok and that GIRLFRIEND “would” have to be taken out of the carrier while TSA took the carrier out of room. I was so scared that GIRLFRIEND would freak out or get away!!!

Believe it or not, all went great! Linda was confident and wonderful! She took GIRLFRIEND out of the carrier in a small room and waited for the carrier to be returned. GIRLFRIEND tucked her head in Linda’s lap and never moved! She went back into her carrier and off they went!

    Well, it gets better!!!

GIRLFRIEND got to Linda’s house and did great! She is in the bedroom with Linda, her husband and BOYFRIEND! GIRLFRIEND was even on the bed with them and slept with them the first night! I have a picture that will just bring tears to your eyes! When they say that there is a happy story waiting for every rescued cat, well, this one is TRUE!!!

I am forever grateful to Linda for loving GIRLFRIEND and giving her a loving home. I miss GIRLFRIEND so much, but I just couldn’t be happier! This is truly one of the happiest stories I had the privilege of telling!!!

BLESSINGS TO LINDA, HER HUSBAND, BOYFRIEND & GIRLFRIEND!!! (I know I have posted a LOT of pictures, but what better way to tell her story!!!)
