  • Winkie and Beach Boy Adopted Together!

Winkie and Beach Boy Adopted Together!

    Update Jan. 2019:

A very nice “empty nest” couple called me after receiving our FURR Christmas card. They had donated to FURR before! They are Sheryl & Brian. They have 3 girl kitties but felt their heartstrings pulled when they saw the picture of WINKY on our Christmas card. They had lost their 4th cat to cancer and thought they might like to rescue WINKY. They came to the lodge and visited for a while. Of course I was happy that this amazing couple that LOVED cats wanted one of ours (their other 3 had come from other places), but I was worried about Beach Boy and Winky being separated.

Blinkie, Winky’s sister, has never been as attached to her brother or Beach Boy, so I wasn’t as worried about her. She is more independent and I felt like she would be fine, in time, with any other kitty friend or maybe even as an only kitty.

Anyway, the meeting went very well and the couple just loved Winky. They left the lodge pretty positive about adopting him, but I told them to go home and think it over carefully, also giving me time to cope with the idea of separating Winky and Beach Boy. I did tell them the story of how Beach Boy took over caring for Winky and basically adopted him as his little son! It was truly amazing to see Beach Boy watch over him and also to watch Winky follow Beach Boy around EVERYWHERE! Winky would actually mimic whatever BB would do……eating the same food, sleeping in the same place & going potty at the same time!

I was so happy, but so sad at the same time and could not sleep that night.

The next day, I got a phone call from the couple. I was in the car with Mike going to lunch and I just burst out into tears and had to hang up the phone! Of course Mike was waiting to hear what in the world had happened……..I told him that the wonderful couple who had wanted Winky called to say that they wanted Beach Boy too! I could not believe my ears & just could not contain myself! As sad as I was going to be, saying goodbye to Beach Boy, I knew this was just another “meant to be” God stop! I had to call Sheryl & Brian back and apologize for not being able to speak to them at that moment, but I was so taken back by their call, that I needed a moment!

Beach Boy and I had been through a lot after I trapped & rescued him underneath my beach cottage. That was last year in Garden City Beach. I was trying, once again, to get away for a week with my family and rest from all the stresses of rescue work…………well, there he was, living underneath “MY” cottage! He was skin and bones, and he would run away like lightening as soon as he would see me, but he certainly did come back during the nights to eat the food I would leave for him. I managed to get a local rescue group to loan me a trap and, of course, I got him.

After several months at FURR, Beach Boy got healthy and his wonderful, sweet personality started coming out! He was an absolute doll and easy to love! I was immediately attached to this big, kind boy cat.

When Beach Boy took over caring for Winky, we knew that a bond had formed between these two. How in the world did this happen and did God just know that they needed this happy ending??? That WE needed this happy ending?

Anyway, the cats are delivered to their amazingly beautiful HUGE house and they are all set up in a large bonus room with lots of windows, window seats, toys, cat trees and some FURR blankets that I had brought for them. Both the kitties came out of their carriers and slinked around a bit and then BOTH of them went to the TOP of the cat tree and snuggled together on a FURR blanket from out of their room!

I kissed & kissed them on their heads and cried as I left, but I know this is best and that they will be so happy there! Sheryl and Brian are the true kind of cat lovers! They have 3 other young cats and their house is just filled with lots of cat toys, cat blankets, cat beds, cat trees and anything any cat could ever want! This couple will spare nothing to make sure that their kitties are healthy (best food), happy (best toys & trees) and have the best home (love, love, love) that they can give them!!!

Sheryl promised me that she would kiss them both on the head every night before bed (like I always did to them) AND she promised me that the first time Beach Boy stands up on his hind legs to give her a head butt as she leans over to him or gets a nose-to-nose kiss from him that she will think of me! Those were treasured memories I will never, ever forget.

  • Dicey Adopted!

    Dicey Adopted!

March 27, 2025 UPDATE: The news is not good.  Poor DICEY had an ultrasound that diagnosed him with advanced lymphoma.  He is back home with his loving mom, Karen, and will spend his last few days at home.  It is devastating news & hard to understand how he went down hill so fast.  Being only around 10-11 years old, he just seems too young for this to be happening. Please pray for Karen & DICEY as they go through this journey together.

March 27, 2025 ANOTHER URGENT PRAYER REQUEST!!! DICEY was adopted several years ago when FURR was in Waxhaw & Judy helped me rescue him from her back yard! His owners are great friends of Mike & me.

DICEY has become sick after a dental procedure and is losing weight & not eating. We are very worried about DICEY & he is LOVED by many! He is an amazing kitty & even gets along with a large black lab in his home. DICEY is having bloodwork & ultrasound today and will stay at the vet’s office overnight. Results should be known tomorrow. PLEEEEASE pray for this amazing cat ! He was a feral cat that turned into a truly loved family member.

    Thank you,
    Terry ^,,^<

Pinky and Girlfriend Hooters Loving Life Together! – April 2019

Update December 1, 2021 Pinky is adopted! Hooters is still available

What a hilarious couple! Pinky (left-male) and Hooters (right female) are so happy together! Please consider adopting them together!

Please consider clicking “Donate” on the right to help us recover from paying $1,000 total for two recent, urgent surgeries. Please see the July 11th update below for details.

Update July 11, 2021 PINKY had an infected canine.  It was a tooth that had been broken off before we rescued him and I had been keeping an eye on it.  It became inflamed & I knew it was hurting him.  PINKY went in for that tooth to be removed & also had a dental cleaning which was also needed.  He seems to be much better now!  I have to wonder if PINKY’s broken tooth came from being abused in his past life…..so sad! PINKY also had eye surgery a couple of months ago.  His right eye continued to water all the time and the vet said that he had that eyelash “thingy” going on where the eyelashes start to grow in towards the eyeball.  Every time he would blink, the eyelashes would scratch his eye ball.  Poor buddy!  But, that surgery went well also and he is doing great!

PINKY is still in love with HOOTERS and they both desperately need a home!!!

Meet all FURR kitties available for adoption on our Petfinder page!

Read on for the amazing story of Pinky’s near-death experience with heartworms.

    April 27, 2019

GOOD NEWS! PINKY went to Dr. Sayer this week to get another echo cardiogram & checkup. His heart and lungs look CLEAR!!! The heart worm(s) has passed and he is doing GREAT! We are able to stop all medications at this point. I am sooooo happy for PINKY! He is one of only a very few number of cats that survive heart worm disease!

The medicine that PINKY was on to help keep his airways open is also a bit of an appetite suppressant………..also, it tends to make the cat a bit hyper, so hopefully now his appetite will pick back up and he will settle down a little bit! He is a screamer, talker, pacer & just overall seemingly unsettled cat. Now we will watch him to return to a more normal state!

PINKY’S case will be used in studies by these vets. It really is a miracle that he survived! Thanks for all your prayers for him!

    February 5, 2019

Pinky is doing really well, eating well and seems to be back to normal! It is wonderful to see him talking and wanting attention again! He will need to go back to the cardiologist in 3-4 weeks for another echo cardiogram and xray to see if the heartworm has completely passed. Meanwhile, I am medicating him twice a day with LOTS of stuff (anti-inflammatory, steriods, etc.) and he is doing really well! Thanks again for ALL the support; both financially and mentally!!! Our prayers were answered with this one for sure!!!

    Good news:
Fundraiser is complete and we raised $2,000 to save Pinky! He is home from ICU and resting comfortably at the FURR facility!

    January 30, 2019
PINKY came home last night! I monitored him throughout the night and he is doing very well! He ate all of his supper last night & is slowing eating his breakfast today. He seems good and happy to be back! He has lost some weight, but we will work hard to put that back on him. He is on a lot of medications for now, but hopefully he will get past all of this heartworm disease and end up 100% & ready for adoption! Thank you again for everything you have done for him!!!

    January 29, 2019 9 pm
PINKY IS HOME! I cant believe he made it through such a hard ordeal…..he is a LOT better, and happy to be home, but not completely out of the woods….

It was very emotional when I went to get him. I picked him up and he put his arms around my neck & started purring up a storm…..even the vet tech commented….

He is currently in rm 6 by himself. He needs a couple of days alone to be quiet. Of course, I’m watching him on my video monitor, and he is pacing a bit…..I hope he can settle down & rest, but I will check on him later.

Pinky will be on lots of medication for the next few weeks. The heartworm still needs to successfully pass out of his body.

I’m so happy that he is home! It has been a tough 4 days!

I believe we have raised enough money to pay his bill. I cant thank you all enough for caring about this kitty. Your prayers & financial support have saved his life!

    January 29, 2019 2 pm
This morning, the cardiologist said that Pinky had a good night. He is eating and doing well. He has been slowly weaned off of his oxygen and seems to be tolerating that OK. He is on a lot of medications, but did spike a fever. She wanted to monitor his fever this morning for a few hours before telling me anything.

I just talked to the cardiologist again. Pinky’s fever is under control and he has been normal temp for the last few hours. She wants to monitor him throughout the day, but if he continues to do well, she wants me to bring him HOME LATE AFTERNOON!!!

If Pinky comes home, he will have to be isolated for a couple of days. He will be on lots of medications for a while, but his prognosis is good. He has really been through the wringer. I am amazed that he has lived through all of this and I am extremely grateful to everyone for all of the financial support and prayers!!!

    January 28, 2018 11 pm
The cardiologist called me this afternoon. It sounds like it was the right move to get Pinky to Dr. Sayer. She said the echocardiogram SHOWS the heartworm that is causing Pinky’s troubles. Pinky would have been dead if no one had done KHH on Sat…..I was really busy on Sat, and could not get anyone for KHH, so i had to hurry down there around 2:30 to ck on everybody & feed lunch……folks, that was a “God stop”!

Dr. Sayer said that they were going to give Pinky steroids, blood thinner & continue the antibiotics & hopefully he can pass the worm successfully. He will be closely monitored. He is where he needs to be in ICU. She said he had been eating, feeling & acting good & was stable. She said that she was hoping he would have a good night.

I just called this evening to see how Pinky was doing. Unfortunately, he has spiked a fever and has some wicked diarrhea & refuses to eat. The vet tech was trying to reach Dr. Sayer to tell her. Now I’m worried all over again. This poor kitty!

What an emotional roller coaster. Please continue to pray for him & I will update u all in the am.

Please know that donations are coming in for Pinky and I am amazed and grateful for all the love & concern being shown for this amazing kitty!!! Thank u all so very very much!!!

    January 28, 2019 11 am
Pinky is doing better this morning……….eating, acting normal and tried to bite the technician. This tells me his is definitely feeling a lot better. That is the good news.

Pinky cannot breathe when taken out of the oxygen chamber. That is the bad news. Obviously the antibiotics and oxygen has made him feel better, but there is still something terribly wrong and he cannot live in a chamber.

The thought is that he does have a blood clot somewhere as a result of the heart worms.

The bill so far is $1,700. I agreed to let him be transferred to the cardiologist specialist, Dr. Sayer, where he will get an echo cardiogram. Af Please pray that this will give a definitive answer on where the clot is and then they can try to treat it. This additional test and consult is another $500. I made the decision to at least do this before putting him down.

I will let you all know the results of the test (being done today) and then I will need all of you to help me make some tough decisions.

I still pray for Pinky and hope he will come through all of this ok.

THIS IS EXACTLY WHY OUTSIDE KITTIES DIE THAT ARE NOT TREATED EVERY 30 DAYS WITH HEART WORM PREVENTION!!! TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW! THIS IS COMPLETELY PREVENTABLE & SO UNFAIR TO THE CATS!!!

    January 27, 2019

Pinky is in intensive care in the C.A.R.E. Animal Hospital and we urgently need to raise $2,500 in donations by 1/31/19 to save his life! The veterinarians think he has thrown a blood clot and are giving him oxygen to help him breathe and treating him with IV fluids, blood thinners and antibiotics while providing 24 hour medical attention. His life hangs in the balance while this urgent care is given, but it is also very expensive. FURR had some funds, but they were quickly depleted as this level of care costs $1,000 per day.  Please donate any amount safely and securely by clicking on the DONATE button to the right and help save Pinky today!!!!

    Pinky’s Story

PINKY is an ALL WHITE GORGEOUS male kitty with pink ears! Watch his video! PINKY has been rescued by FURR and gaining weight after living outside on his own for months! PINKY is really TALKATIVE & begs for attention! He loves to rub your legs & tell you how happy he is now! PINKY is about 1-2 years old, he is really soft and SNOW white! He has had all of his shots & vet work done. PINKY does well with other cats OR he can be a single cat. PINKY is an awesome boy & will be a BIG kitty when he gets to his ideal weight!

  • Treesa’s Christmas Miracle Adoption!

    Treesa’s Christmas Miracle Adoption!

December 2019 – Terry Schultz tells the incredible Story of Treesa’s rescue from horrific abuse, years of recovery and her very special Christmas Miracle FURR-ever home adoption…

    I don’t know where to even begin……..

I get long winded telling my cat stories and then I can’t see to type through the tears………

This story undoubtedly is one of the most amazing of all time………….here goes!

    “TREESA”
I received a call a few years ago about a cat stuck up in a tree. The caller said that she had dogs and that the cat would not come down. She told me that the cat had been up in the tree for at LEAST five days. I could not believe what I was hearing. I rushed over to assess the situation, and there she was…….hanging over a branch about 50 feet up. That was high. It was too high for me to climb up and reach her or for my ladder to reach her.

I called a wildlife trapper that I knew. He came over (and after paying him significantly), he managed to get his very tall ladder up the tree close to the cat. I managed to climb up there and grab her. I stuffed her in a pillow case to keep her safe and calm, and with no sound or fuss by her at all, lowered her to the ground with me.

Of course I rushed her back to the rescue facility. I put her in a separate room for isolation, got food and water to her immediately. She began to eat & drink to regain her strength. The next day, when I opened the door to go in and check on her, she let out the loudest and scariest scream I have ever heard! The closer I got to her, the more she screamed & the louder she got. I truly believe she thought I was coming in to kill her! The night before, I think she was just so emaciated & dehydrated that she did not have the strength to react to anything. Afterwards, I realized that was how I easily grabbed her out of the tree.

Needless to say, this was the beginning of a very long and difficult road. I named her “TREESA” for obvious reasons, but this poor cat was just petrified of anyone that would come near her, and she was also scared of any animal (cat or dog) that she would see through her glass door or window. The screams that came out of her were shrilling and made me wonder if the neighbors were going to call the police……….they had to have heard her???

The screaming continued for weeks, but finally she began to be calmer when I was in the room, but if I reached in to touch her, clean her litter box or give her food, the screaming began. It was the worst case I had ever seen. The abuse that must have happened to this poor animal must have been horrific. I could tell that she was not a “feral” cat. She had seen people before, and her mannerisms told me that she was in a totally defensive mode and literally thought she was going be hurt or killed.

A lot of my time, during these past few years at FURR, has been spent working with TREESA. I made it a point to touch her every day, talk to her, pet her…….in the beginning, only with gloves on, but after a while, I would just use my hands. I suffered many bites, scratches and verbal abuse from TREESA, but I was determined not to give up on her. She very slowing improving. No one really believed me, but I knew that she was getting better…..VERY SLOWLY she “did” improve. She eventually got to come out of her cage and walk around her room. It was probably at least a year later that she was actually allowed to walk outside her room into the hallway, but ONLY if no other cats were around. She was still terrified of new people and other cats.

After persisting for several years, I can truly say that TREESA became my friend. She began sitting in my lap (and sometimes the other volunteers’ laps). The first time I heard her purr, I think I almost fainted. Later came the “biscuits” she would make on a soft blanket or lap. She was always vocal, and continued to be, but her pitches in her voice changed. She would purr, she would chirp, she would meow once in a while….and sometimes, she would still growl, but mostly, I believe TREESA discovered that she had some things to say that weren’t all bad!

TREESA has a huge special place in my heart. Because she could not be around other cats, she has lived alone at the FURR rescue facility in a small room. She would get out a couple times a day to traverse the hallway, but that’s about it. She needed more than I could give her. She needed a home. It is still amazing and unreal to me that TREESA made it to this point. I decided to advertise her for adoption, but I was very detailed and specific in my ad saying that this cat MUST have a cat whisperer……..someone who wanted to “save” an unfortunate soul, not someone that wanted the perfect cat for themselves.

This type of adopter only comes around once in a million years. I really did not have a lot of hope………..but I did pray about it. And then, it happened! It is the best Christmas gift I could ever hope for!

A young girl called me and said that she had read the adoption ad about TREESA. She told me that she wanted to adopt her. She didn’t ask me a lot about her, except that she wanted to give her a home. Can you believe that? This is not a person that wants for selfish reasons, but wants to give love and life to an animal in need. Her name is Kristin. Of course I talked with Kristin extensively about TREESA before she came over. I explained that she needed to be calm, patient, quiet and reserve around her. I explained that although TREESA loved me, she would probably take some time warming up to another human being until she could trust. Kristin seemed to understand exactly what I was talking about……….but I was very nervous. The fact that someone just wanted to meet TREESA, after hearing her horrible story, was a miracle in itself!

Kristin came over to meet TREESA. I sat in the chair first and showed Kristin how much TREESA trusted me. TREESA jumped up into my lap, I stroked her and talked to her. TREESA gave me a kiss (yes, on the lips!), and Kristin just watched without saying a whole lot…….but, I could see in Kristin’s eyes that she understood what was going on.

Kristin sat in the chair next. TREESA immediately jumped up into her lap looking for a warm soft place. Kristin began to slowly pet TREESA and she let TREESA sniff all over her. Kristin was so quiet, slow and calm. I was amazed at how she connected with the energy………sometimes higher and sometimes lower, but Kristin really understood it! Whenever TREESA seemed a little agitated, Kristin would just slowly pull back and let TREESA get comfortable again. It was amazing watching them both!

We left the room in amazement. Kristin said she wanted her. I was stunned and overjoyed, but apprehensive as well and a little overwhelmed. Could my journey and work with this abused animal actually be coming to an end? I’m not sure how I can go to the rescue facility every day and not think about working with TREESA???

I opened the door to TREESA’s room and let her come out into the hallway. Kristin got down on her knees to speak to TREESA and immediately TREESA jumped up onto her lap! Kristin was petting her gently and it looked at if Kristin was going to be stuck in that position for a while because TREESA surely wasn’t going anywhere! (see enclosed picture!) The connection was there. It was “purrfect”!

So, the miracle I had dreamed about for TREESA really did occur. A selfless person came into her life and treated her exactly how she should be treated; as an abused but recovered & delicate animal that only needs love and understanding. Kristin and her husband are one-year newlyweds. They are both professionals and work two opposite shifts so that someone will always be home with TREESA. Their house is adorable!!!

I delivered TREESA to Kristin the next day. Immediately in her new room, TREESA began walking around and investigating everything. TREESA went under the bed, but came back out again right away! She did not hide or act afraid at all. I had brought her scratching toy, her familiar blankets and some other things to make her feel ok. Kristin had bought her a HUGE new cat tree and placed it near the window knowing that TREESA liked to look outside. TREESA was quite comfortable and I was amazed at how well she did. I finally left with HUGE tears in my eyes………..I really think everything is going to be ok.

That night Kristin said that she slept in the room with TREESA. TREESA curled up inside the bend in her legs and purred up a storm. They slept together all night.

The next day, Kristen told me that TREESA was playing up a storm with a feather toy and that she was doing great! She had eaten, taken a poop, had some water and was happy! After a while, Kristin let TREESA sleep curled up on the bed under some covers to take a nap. Kristin assured me that everything was going great………

    (take a moment to cry……………)

Today, Kristin said that TREESA had slipped out of the bedroom. TREESA was rolling around on the floor and acting like it was her house already, sniffing everything and going between the couch and the floor. I guess that’s it then. This amazing cat has finally got an amazing ending to her story. Let me quote Kristin in her last text message to me today:.

Kristin said: “I’m so glad she’s happy here, she has so much love and I’m honored that she’s sharing that with me. Thank you for taking such good care of her to help her be the kitty she is today.”

I’ll end on that note because I can’t see to type any more………

How about that guys! WE did it! You all helped with TREESA & for that, I will be forever grateful!
