October 2022 Carbon is adopted again to a wonderful FURR family!
Carbon with new Mom Vanessa Oct 2022
When Mike saw a black cat walking around in our back yard, 1+ years ago, he yelled to me that our “Johnny Cash” had gotten out ! Mike flew out the door (it was dark outside) and went to scoop him up.
Once the kitty was in the house & it was obviously a really laid back cat, but he wasn’t our Johnny Cash.
Of course I rescued this “carbon copy” of our cat, and named him Carbon.
He was underweight, no collar, covered in fleas & NOT neutered! BUT, he was quite laid back & seemed to be looking for love & food. I’m not sure which he preferred more.
Carbon happy on his new porch Oct 2022
I checked all around the neighborhood, asked tons of people, posted him on Nextdoor, but to no avail. No one seemed to know how this cat landed in MY backyard. I do have a few guesses…..hmmmm…..cat lady’s house…..good place to discard a cat, right?
It wasn’t long before Carbon got adopted to a retired couple. After all, this was one AMAZING cat! He was beautiful, had a personality to die for and loved to be held. The couple also took another FURR kitty that I had also, so Carbon & Blaze went together! These were two amazingly wonderful cats.
A year later it was now April 2022. The couple called me to tell me they were selling their house & moving out of the country. They wanted to return Carbon & BLAZE! Of course I had a total meltdown & couldn’t believe it. Not only was I already overwhelmed with cats, these were two of the best cats we had ever had. Now they are a year older & homeless! What part of “adoption for life” or “your pet is a family member” don’t they understand! I was furious, disappointed & sad for the cats.
Carbon & look-alike Binx Oct 2022
Thank goodness the couple’s daughter stepped up and took Blaze. Of course, I interviewed her fully. She already had cats & said she could only take in one more. She also actually agreed with me about her parents dumping the cats & leaving the country as being CRAZY! She lived in Florida, so poor Blaze had to be transported all the way to her house. It did work out well and she filled out all the necessary paperwork. Her house is beautiful and she updates me often on how Blaze is doing.
Carbon, bless his heart, had to come back to FURR & be uprooted & thrown back into a room full of cats he didn’t know.
He cried a lot in the first couple of weeks due to sadness, confusion & probably missing Blaze. I did notice that as long as someone was with him, petting him & talking to him, he was fine.
Carbon actually turned out to be everyone’s favorite cat to visit at FURR and my husband & me were no exception.
Low & behold, it didn’t take long for him to get a new and wonderful home! Carbon went to a family that I know all too well. They already have 2 FURR cats and another black cat! I knew this would be a huge blessing for Carbon and I knew this new family would NEVER abandon him!!!
Carbon & new friends Oct 2022
Mike and I were both in tears when Carbon left. I know for a fact that we both wanted to keep him, but with 4 geriatric cats & 1 youngster that almost died, we had our hands (and finances) full.
Remarkably, Carbon adjusted to his new home with no problems whatsoever! He just blended right in and never missed a beat! The family already loves him to pieces and he gets along great with their other 3 cats!
I suppose it was just meant to be. I thank God for that. He is such an amazing cat!
We all miss him at FURR. He was one special kitty who would give u kisses if you scratched his back!
(Blaze is doing well also & his new family loves him too!)
Carbon (bottom) & Blaze (top) April 2022
June 2022 Carbon is once again safe and sound a FURR, eagerly awaiting his next FURRever home!
The Story of Carbon and Blaze
CARBON showed up at my house (go figure) as a VERY sweet UN-Neutered all black male, covered in fleas and begging to come inside. He looked just like my personal cat, Johnny Cash, so I thought somehow Johnny Cash had gotten out, only to find it wasn’t him. So, I named this new arrival Carbon because he was the carbon copy of our kitty!
I tried to find out who owned him, with no luck. I had planned on fixing him anyway before turning him back over to the owners, but no one ever claimed him. Carbon was super sweet and fit in with the overloaded number of FURR cats just fine.
BLAZE was one of the kittens that I rescued behind a medical building in Hampstead. I had found a colony of about 25 cats living back there and worked all summer to trap all of them, including several kittens. All of them were fixed, I kept as many as I could (I kept all the kittens) and returned about 12 to the site. The caretaker had been feeding them and making shelters, but needed my help in trapping and fixing all of them. It was a huge job. Blaze was tiny, with no mom, along with his siblings I kept the kittens in my bathroom until they could be fixed and adopted out.
April 2022 previous owners notify FURR they are moving
The couple called me recently to say they had sold their house and were moving out of the country and so could not take the kitties with them. Their daughter, who lives in Florida, agreed to take Blaze. However she cannot take both kitties, which is why Carbon desperately needs a temporary foster home!
Carbon is a lovely, sweet kitty, about 2 years old, very personable and I really have no where to put him. Please ask anyone you know about fostering for a few months while I try to find him another home. I think he is stressed about all the packing and moving, so I would love to find a foster home for him where he can be in a quiet and loving place. He is well worth it! If I had not had my Johnny Cash kitty, I would have kept him for myself.

March 2024 Gray Lady’s Mom recently sent us an update that this kitty “thrives on her daily routine” in her FURR-ever home for the past couple of years. What a great success story after all the suffering and life-threatening health issues she had, as described in her amazing history below. Her Mom says she enjoys morning head rubs, treats, naps in her cat tree and afternoon playtime. We at FURR are thrilled to hear Gray Lady’s news and wish her continued good health and happiness!
June 2022 Gray Lady is adopted! Check back soon for her adoption story.
Feb 4, 2022 This gorgeous long haired beauty has been through hell and back, but now she is ready for love! This amazing girl is very quiet and gentle and just wants a quiet home and belly rubs! Gray Lady has the softest fur you have ever felt and she would love to be the only kitty and the center of your universe! She is one amazing girl nd just under 2 years old. Her eyes are nothing short of amazing emerald green!
Aug 4, 2021 WHAT A JOURNEY! Gray lady goes to the vet every 2 weeks to recheck blood work. She went week before last & had her feeding tube removed! Her blood work at that point was remarkably improved, except for liver values, but at least she was eating on her own (not a lot), and was able to have her feeding tube removed … whew! Poor kitty had that tube in her esophagus for over 3 weeks while I fed and medicated her.
The last checkup visit last week showed continued improvement in blood work and liver values were improved, but not quite within normal range. The vet said that she thought, however, that Gray Lady was well enough for her spay surgery and during that surgery, she would take a liver biopsy.
Yesterday, Gray Lady had her spay surgery and liver biopsy. BUT, during the surgery, the vet felt something very hard in her stomach that was not normal. She decided to do exploratory surgery while Gray Lady was under anesthesia, and low and behold, her stomach had a HUGE hairball inside! The hairball was removed, but I was told it was too big to have ever passed normally! Gray Lady would not have been able to pass it NOR would she have been able to throw it up due to its size! Thank goodness the vet discovered this mass and was able to free her from it!
Gray Lady feeling much better! early July 2021
BUT…….the vet wanted Gray Lady to be on quite a few medications after this extensive surgery, so she kept her overnight to monitor her and give her meds. I had mentioned to the staff that Gray Lady was NOT a fan of getting oral medications and to beware!
Today, I got a call that they could NOT medicate Gray Lady and that I had my work cut out for me with her being on FIVE medications!
It was decided to re-insert a feeding tube for the medications……….poor kitty! During the SECOND surgery to insert the feeding tube, Gray Lady had a HUGE bleed out that was concerning, but the vet finally got the bleeding to stop! This poor cat……………my gosh!
Gray Lady getting medications early July 2021
I brought her home this afternoon and will continue to tube medicate her for the next ten days & watch for any bleeding. Hopefully, for her next recheck appointment and blood work, she will be able to get the tube removed and FINALLY GET TO BE A NORMAL KITTY!
Throughout this entire ordeal, this kitty has remained very sweet and humble. I believe she knows that I am doing everything I can to save her. It is hopeful that she will one day be a normal cat with no medical issues, but we will see what the liver biopsy says in a few days.
Meanwhile, please pray for this kitty! Please also consider making a donation to help cover her medical costs! Every visit is $150-$200 and her surgery yesterday AND today was over $1,100.
July 11, 2021 – Update on gray Lady: Just wanted to let you all know that GRAY LADY is steadily and slowly improving (the 6th cat trapped & rescued in the Jenkins colony @ Topsail Beach)! I am still tube feeding her several times a day, but she is starting to eat a little bit on her own also. She is almost finished with her MANY medications and I feel like we have turned the corner. I really think she is going to recover and hopefully move on to the adoption floor!
GRAY LADY is a beautiful cat with long silky blue/gray colored hair. She has huge round green eyes and she looks like she is smiling from the side. I just love her especially knowing how much she has been through and how she came so close to death. She deserves a life of leisure with lots of love, brushing and comforts of inside safety! Here are a few pictures to catch you up to date on her progress. She is definitely looking a lot better! It has been a tough road.
Gray Lady is very sick! early July 2021
July 2, 2021 I was called about another colony at Surfside Beach. That is about 40 minutes away from me. I have trapped, so far, about 9 cats and am only about half way done. There is a lot of time and travel involved. All of the cats have to be taken to the S/N clinic or my vet.
“GRAY LADY” is the Mama of an older set of kittens, Spot, Charlie, Percy, Marsha and Sara, herself a young, but very beautiful, adult female – GORGEOUS long haired Russian Blue color with no white. Trapped her and after examining her, discovered that she was NURSING! (All of the older kittens above where hers!), but this must mean that she has ANOTHER new litter. I was devastated. Had to release her to make sure the babies survived.
After a few weeks, Gray Lady showed up with TWO little kittens, Lucy and Willy! With the caretakers’ help, managed to trap the 2 kittens, but even using the kittens as bait, Gray Lady would NOT go back into the trap. Lots of time spent driving, waiting, praying but with no success. The kittens were about 4-5 weeks old, but safe. The kittens had a hard time and back and forth to the vet with them, but finally started coming around. Gray Lady still at large………….
.GRAY LADY above was finally retrapped with the help of the caretakers and my drop trap. By the time we re-trapped her, she was very skinny and emaciated, BUT she had a huge protruding belly. I couldn’t believe that she was pregnant AGAIN with her THIRD litter! Gray Lady was feral, but tolerant of being handled, medicated, etc. I took her to the vet and got her rabies (no distemper when preggo) and blood work done. She was very very thin and weak. At only a little over a year old and being pregnant again for the 3rd time, she needed emergency care. I set her up in my bathroom with all the needed prescription food, fluids given IV and kept her quiet. Unfortunately after a harrowing ER visit, poor Gray Lady lost her third litter of kittens but still clinging to life herself!
The next day after the ER visit, I took her to my vet and they did ultrasound, xrays, bloodwork and thorough exam. Gray Lady was fading and her organs were shutting down. She was anemic, emaciated and just giving up. She was prescribed a lot meds, probiotics, antibiotics, fluids, etc. My vet (who was absolutely wonderful, caring and completely aware of what I had also been through) put her under anesthesia and inserted a feeding tube in her esophagus to make it easier for me to feed her and medicate her.
It has now been almost 2 weeks. Gray Lady has slowly improved each day. It has been a nightmare. Every sign of something positive just lights me up! She was becoming jaundice, but now her color is back. She just started eating a little bit on her own YESTERDAY! She seems more alert and “almost” picked up her tail when I brushed her back. I am very hopeful that she will survive. Please say a prayer for this beautiful kitty. She has been through many of her 9 lives in her short life.
If anyone wants to donate, we NEED money. Caretakers have given, neighbors have given, but a lot of our old donors have stopped giving since we moved. I don’t know why since the work continues every single day and there is no bottom to that bucket. Thank you all for helping with the bills for all these cats including Gray Lady (more news to come………this is just the beginning of what I have been doing).

Gracie shaved for injections to hopefully save her life March 2022
June 2022 – Good News! Gracie survived FIP (see her story below) and now Terry, FURR’s President and Founder, is adopting her!
March 2022 – Please go to our Go Fund Me page to help meet several urgent needs described below!
The little rescued kitten named “GRACIE” who came from a colony I saved at Topsail Beach has been sick. I took her to the vet in December for just being lethargic and she was running a low grade fever. Her fever, despite antibiotics and other treatments, stayed for several weeks. I had to medicate her, give her fluids, monitor her, hand feed her, weigh her often and spent many hours taking her back and forth to the vet with no resolution in site.
After about a month of nonstop care (I had put her in my personal bathroom to care for her round the clock), she was no better. I took her in to be euthanized since I could not stand to see her suffer any further, losing weight, not wanting to eat and becoming neurologically unsound in her back end.
Before I took her in to be euthanized, someone reached out to me and gave me a phone number to call suspecting that Gracie had FIP – Feline Infectious Peritonitis, a rare disease that is very difficult to diagnosis and treat. I called the person and rushed Gracie to see the person at 10 pm one night. The medicine that I purchased is not approved by the FDA and cannot be obtained by a vet. The medicine has been proven to cure FIP in China, but not in the US. I didn’t have anything to lose, since she was dying, so I bought the medicine.
Within one day of getting the medicine, GRACIE’s fever broke. She immediately started eating. Within a week, she was walking normally and feeling a whole lot better. With a long way to go still, I needed to continue the medicine every day for 84 days. I have managed to buy the medicine with just barely enough in the FURR account to keep her going……….
However, she needs 2 more weeks of medicine and we have run out of money. The medicine runs about $1,000 every two weeks, so you can imagine how this has but a huge strain on FURR.
I thank the people who have given to help save her: my parents, her caretakers when she was living in the woods (before FURR was able to rescue her), and other donors who have given recently. Without those funds, she would have died.
Please pass along the word that FURR is desperate for funding for Gracie, Mama Google and other expenses. Thank you all for caring and prayers always help!
