    Katie is Adopted!

    Terry with Katie Dec 2023

Jan. 18, 2024 KATIE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!  OK….I DID IT!

KATIE, the little orange kitten that road home from a guy’s workplace in the engine of his big work truck, has found her new home….at my house! The wife called me when she heard the kitten crying in the truck engine.  I told her to put food out for her. Sure enough, she came out of the truck to eat and then quickly ran back up into the engine.  This couple lives on a really busy road!

Since Kristy, FURR Volunteer, lived somewhat close, I asked her to loan her trap to catch the baby.  It worked (thank goodness) and I went to pick her up! She was feral and quite skittish, but warmed up quickly.

When I took her to the vet, the date that they put down for her birthday was THE DAY my big orange boy, Sebastian, passed away. I couldn’t believe it…I had Sebastian for almost 19 years.  Mike and I were so sad when we had to say goodbye to him in August 2023.

Katie at Terry’s home Dec 2023

Katie appeared to have been born for a reason (in my mind) and my saving her was not just coincidental. I have officially adopted her and she is the first cat that I’ve ever adopted that wasn’t sick, injured, feral or just because no one else wanted it!

KATIE will have a good life with Mike & me.  She already sleeps with us and our other cats AND she likes our dogs! Woo hoo!

Nov. 22, 2023 Meet Katie our new kitten! Watch her video! Here is her amazing survival and rescue story!

Please note: FURR ensures all kitties are vaccinated, spayed and microchipped at the earliest appropriate age.

A sweet young lady called me to tell me that there was a kitten inside the MOTOR of her husband’s truck!!!  With no cats or animals anywhere around their house, the feeling was that it came from a ride in the truck motor!

This couple lived right on busy Castle Hayne highway.  They didn’t know how to save the kitten because it would only come out of the truck for food, then it would go right back inside the truck motor!

I had her call Kristy, on her side of town.  Kristy loaned her a trap and showed her how to use it.

The kitten was trapped in a matter of minutes.  I asked the lady if she could please put it in the bathroom for the night and that I would try to call around the next day (yesterday) to find a rescue with room (and money) or a foster.

Of course I found NO help.

The lady said her boyfriend would not let her bring the kitten in the house, so it spent the night in the trap with no water or litter box.

She told me she was going to have to let it out of the trap.  This poor kitten had already survived getting killed in a truck motor, but with the house being right on the highway, the kitten would surely be killed.

I finished up my chores and headed out to Castle Hayne.  The lady said the kitten was scared and she didn’t want to touch or scare it.

When I got there, it was a tiny orange female a couple of months old.  It was the cutest thing I had ever seen.

I just grabbed her out of the trap by her scruff, looked her over good and put her in my carrier.  The sweet girl wanted to keep her, but she said they couldn’t afford it and the boyfriend said “no”.  She was in tears, but she had done the right thing by saving her life until I could get there.

I named the kitten after the lady:  “Katie”.

I took Katie to Sound Cat and had her tested, shots, etc.  I dewormed her and treated for fleas, etc.

She at at FURR in the ferret cage & needs LOTS of love!  She was shaking and scared, but when I held her to my chest, she started purring up a storm!  She’s just freakin’ adorable!!!

  • Charlie is Adopted!

    Charlie is Adopted!

Charlie with New Dad Feb 2025

February 2, 2025 Our tiny little fluff ball, CHARLIE, went to her new home yesterday! A very nice fella took this little stuffed animal kitty!  He just loves her and you can see that she loves him too!  It’s adorable!

This gorgeous kitty has been overlooked for way too long because she is shy!  But this is a match made in Heaven and her new owner just thinks she’s great!  It really was meant to be.

CHARLIE (is a girl) and she is the LAST cat to be finally placed out of a colony at a former Seafood facility that I rescued at Surf City!  It took two years, lots of taming time and lots of funding to support and care for all these cats.  Now, the last one has been adopted and I’m so happy for her!

The couple that alerted me to all if these feral cats named all of them.  Charlie was thought to be a boy, but was not! I think her owner likes the name anyway!

Blessings to Charlie and her future with Ryan!  She’s one of the most adorable cats I have ever rescued!

Nov. 12, 2023 Meet Charlie in her new video! She is the LAST kitty left from my colony rescue at Topsail Beach.  She was completely traumatized when rescued and I was told by the caretakers that she witnessed her brother killed by a coyote.

Charlie is such a petite little girl and just needs LOVE!!!  barely weighing 5 lbs., she’s like a fuzzy stuffed animal that you just want to cuddle!

Emmy & Bubbles with Adopting Family 1-9-2025

January 30, 2025 EMMY & BUBBLES, two of our adorable and well loved black cats have been adopted! I am just ecstatic with joy but did shed quite a few tears too!

Emmy was born at FURR and I always felt like I birthed her and the other “Battlet” kittens myself! Read the amazing Battlet family’s story below, including Mama Batts (available) and Daddy Batts (adopted also). Watching them grow up and having no one want them because they were black, was heart breaking.

Bubbles was one of the kittens I rescued from the Atlantic Seafood place along with 70+ other cats. Bubbles was always so shy and so sweet!  He never had a mean bone in his body and just loved everyone!  He will be missed too!

The wonderful couple, that saw how special these cats were, had a hard time deciding which 2 black ones they wanted!  I think they got a great pair!

The night before they left, Emmy & Bubbles were playing and wrestling which made me feel extra good about the pair going together! I’m so relieved that they are in a great home.  Their first night went well and Emmy is purring all over the place & Bubbles is being his quiet sweet self.

I can’t wait for Emmy to pray for them!

Emmy & Bubbles at FURR – Adopted Jan 2025

Nov. 20, 2023 update My name is Bubbles and I’m a BEAUTIFUL little boy that FURR saved!  My best traits are my silky smooth fur and my adorable personality!  I have the sweetest little meow and I love to tell everybody what I’m thinking!  You just won’t find a calmer, more laid back kinda kitty than me!  I’m totally vetted and ready to move on with my life.  FURR has prepared me well!  I also have 2 sisters:  Beaches (meet her below), who looks just like me and Mermaid (meet her below) who is a tortoise shell.  We all three had a rough start in life.  Are you the one to change all that for me?

    August 7, 2023 – 3 Kittens Urgently still need a Foster Home!!

August 3, 2023 – The 3 little kittens that I rescued from the seafood place (Mama Sunfish’s kittens) were all fixed today.  They went to the S/N clinic and had their surgery, shots, blood tests and microchips.
The bill was just under $400.  They are doing well! Please donate to help!

Original Post – Early August 2023 – Do you love cats? Do you work from home or stay home a lot? Why not volunteer to foster kittens and make a huge difference in their lives?! Three kittens need a temporary foster home where they can get lots of pets and love throughout the day!

    Mermaid – pretty girl – Aug 2023

These 3 little kittens that I rescued from the seafood place NEED LOVE!  These little guys are still really shy and I just haven’t had enough time to spend with them. We need someone who can spend a lot of time with them, loving & petting them, to help them progress!!!

Please let me know if you are interested SOON!  Maybe check with friends, neighbors, family and co-workers!

  • Mama Hoovie is Adopted!

    Mama Hoovie is Adopted!

Sept. 26, 2023 WONDERFUL NEWS!  MAMA HOOVER WAS ADOPTED TODAY!!!
I delivered her to her new home and the nicest couple has adopted her!  Katarina & Jon seem like the “purrfect” couple to give this SWEET kitty lots of love.  She totally deserves it & has waited longer than she should have for her special moment!

I was told there was a feral mama cat living at an abandoned house in Hampstead off of Hoover Rd.  The person also told me that this cat had little kittens!

I went out to trap and rescue the feral family, but the kittens were no where to be found.  I went back there time and time again, leaving food and water for poor mama cat, but the kittens were gone.

I trapped this poor mama kitty and after having all her vet work done and working with her at FURR, she just melted my heart!  She became such a sweet and grateful little girl and would just curl up in my arms like a bunny.

Of course I was in tears leaving her today, but hooray and congrats to this wonderful couple that took a tiny, somewhat shy and humble, BLACK CAT!!!

I will miss her every day.

    Terry

Original Story I have had it rough & had a litter of kittens in the woods all by myself.  Starving myself, I could not feed or save them.  Despite my hardships, I am very grateful to FURR for saving me and I am the SWEETEST little kitty ever! I am a young adult kitty who LOVES to be picked up, held, brushed and just ANY contact is appreciated.  I was so lonely for so long, I think I’m trying to make up for lost time! Just come spend a little time with me….you’ll be so glad you did!!!

    Sept 2023

September 11, 2023 ASHTON GOT ADOPTED!!! So THRILLED to tell everyone that ASHTON has found her wonderful “furrever” home down off of Carolina Beach Road with a wonderful family!

Mom works part time as a nurse and Dad travels, but both just lost their beloved tortie kitty.  They came to meet ASHTON and I told her to put on her best face ad not to be a DIVA, but ASHTON was her normal entertaining self and talked, rubbed, played and swatted a little with some play bites.  Personally, I LOVE her tortitude and basically you just have to understand that she is a princess and she calls the shots!

I loved the couple and really thought it would be a GREAT fit for a one-cat household full of love and time to give her! They called me back and wanted her!!!  I delivered her yesterday!  She explored all around making meowing conversations to herself.  Today she is sitting in mom’s lap, eating her food and using the litter box like a champ.

I really miss her at FURR greeting me and demanding treats, but this was meant to be.  I’m thrilled!

July 2023 I’m miss personality PLUS!  I really LOVE to talk about everything! I’m soooo happy when I get visitors!  My coloring is gorgeous  because I am a Bengal-looking tabby/tortie!  Very unique!  I would LOVE to be an only cat, but if you introduce me slowly, other cats grow on me!  Everyone loves me at FURR! I am a young adult kitty.

  • Gordon Final Update #12: Adopted!

    Gordon Final Update #12: Adopted!

March 30, 2025 It is impossible to describe the sadness and great sense of loss that both Gordon’s loving family and the entire FURR family feels at our loss of Gordon far, far too soon. There is some comfort in knowing he had all love in the world and comforts of home for the last chapter of his amazing life. We all understand what a truly amazing kitty he was given all he endured before Terry rescued him and helped him achieve the best life he so richly deserved. His amazing rescue & story is below. He will always be remembered and loved by all who had the good fortune to know him.

March 29, 2025 – 1:57 pm Update on GORDON is also very sad and unbelievable. Only a few days ago, GORDON was loving his life and mom, and now he is fighting for his life. He was put on a pain medicine for an eye infection and the medicine has taken a toll on his poor body and kidneys. He is in the best hands possible with Dr. Gervais & Dr. Rockwell at Sound Cat, but his prognosis is questionable. We are giving him through the weekend to see if he can pull through it or not. Please PRAY, PRAY, PRAY for DICEY & KAREN and for GORDON & HEATHER.

I know God hears us all. Thank u all so much!

    Terry

March 27, 2025 – 10:15 pm UPDATE ON GORDON: GORDON was transferred to Sound Cat late this afternoon.  His numbers are not great.  He is on fluids and on a heating pad since his body temp had dropped.  We won’t know if he can pull through this until the morning.  He’s obviously a fighter & certainly has overcome major challenges such as starvation, broken jaw, broken hip & bones, injured ear half gone, rotten teeth, etc.  This kitty deserves a long easy life of love & comfort. PRAYING !!!

    TERRY

March 27, 2025 – 4:30 pm – URGENT GENT PRAYERS NEEDED!!! GORDON is being rushed to ER with blood coming from his mouth, lethargy, not eating and really sick. Came on suddenly and local vet thinks he is sepsis. Cannot imagine how in the world he got sick and his owner, Heather, is just beside herself. She said just a few days ago, he was fine and very happy and loving. All of us are holding our breaths and saying prayers for this amazing kitty that has already been through so much…

Gordon with new Family – Dec 2024

December 19, 2024 I can finally write this update without crying my eyes out! GORDON has settled in his new home beautifully!  Of course I could never imagine him happy, in any way, without his mom (me!), but I am glad to be wrong!

GORDON’S new Mom & Dad are telling me how wonderful he is doing!  Gordon has met the dog and other cat with no problems.  He is wandering around the house or snuggling with his new family!

I am missing this beautiful cat every day and couldn’t have asked for a better placement for him.

This torn up, beat up, skinny, dirty feral cat was soon to die when rescued by FURR, and now he is in LA LA LAND!

Guys, this is what it is truly all about!!!  Happy endings!!!

    Terry

    Gordon’s 10-19-24 Video

November, 5, 2024 An amazing couple, that I approved to come and meet him, has decided that GORDON must join their family!  This couple lives in Leland, NC and they have 1 cat-friendly rescued dog & 3 other cats!  GORDON took to them very quickly.  After getting over getting my feelings hurt (I am his mama!!!) I realized that GORDON “is” ready to move on to a “furrever” home and somehow I’ve got to say goodbye….

It’s possible that he will be leaving this Friday.

I want to thank all the people who have helped this cat survive an unbelievable journey. Your can read Gordon’s amazing rescue & rehab story in the 11 prior dated postings below on this page.

Chris – who called me about this broken down cat in his yard.  Here is what he wrote to me:

Gordon at Rescue - June 2023
Gordon at Rescue – June 2023

    “Hello,

There is a feral cat that’s been hanging around my home lately. The cat appears to be in poor health. I see it drooling, head appears to be shaking some. I have been putting out food and water. I wanted to reach out for some assistance as I think it’s health is deteriorating. Thank you

    Chris”

Also, see the picture on the right he sent me.

Thank you to Sound Cat staff & Dr. Rockwell for putting this cat back together!  Thank you to the FURR volunteers that helped me care for him all this time & I have been “furrever” changed by having Gordon in my life.

    Terry

October 19, 2023 Update #11 Watch his new video from TODAY showing our sweet boy Gordon, who is ready for adoption so he can give LOTS of LOVE to his “FURR-ever” family!

This is update #11 because poor Gordon has had a very long rescue and rehabilitation journey, as the prior 10 updates below describe. Terry Schultz, our President, pours her love and resources into these amazing kitties even in the early days after rescue when the poor kitty’s veterinary and behavioral needs are great. Gordon is feelin’ good and thankful for Terry’s help and for everyone who supports FURR!

    Gordon – Jan 2024

January 13, 2024 Update #10 GORDON is making HUGE progress with me. Watch his latest video! He is always out & about in his room now.  He gets up on the cat trees & seems to be getting along well.  I clipped his nails yesterday, for the very first time, and he was wiggly, but pretty good.

He has come a long long way from a ferocious injured feral cat to a nearly tame cat.  He has a broken hip, still, but it has already set and he does not seem restricted by it.  We have decided not to do surgery on his hip.

His broken jaw was wired together, but as you know, it did not mend totally.  We took off the wire after 2 months and he seems to be doing ok….go figure!  His jaw drops down on one side and he drools out of that side of his mouth when he eats.

All in all, he is doing great!  I am able to pick him up, love on him, brush him and scratch him.  He still swats at me occasionally just to remind me that he is in control and a hiss here and there, but I just ignore him!  I tell him he is a beautiful and lucky boy!

Gordon purring as Terry pets him – Oct 2023

October 12, 2023 Update #9 Really wonderful news from today when GORDON actually purred while I was petting him! Here’s a new video of Terry petting him while he’s purring (although it’s not audible in the video)! He has a very faint purr for such a big boy, but just feeling that vibration in his body and hearing that faint sound made me the happiest person ever!

GORDON went for his final vet visit and was released!  His broken jaw is as healed as it will ever be, but despite it not healing like we had hoped, it is more stable than it was.  He is eating just fine and has gained a couple of pounds! Many thanks to Dr. Rockwell who cared for him during this traumatic situation.  She had to make some tough decisions and I am so thankful for her expertise!

GORDON went through a wired-together jaw, then pulling all his teeth except 2, and possible hip surgery after that.  However, I have observed him getting around his room just fine and climbing in and out of the litter box with no problem.  We have decided that he is done with surgeries!  His broken hip has probably set itself in place by now and he is doing well.

The goal for GORDON’S future is somewhat up in the air.  I would absolutely LOVE to see him adopted into a loving home and to someone who can sympathize with his story, but GORDON is still quite timid, still hisses at people and has a long way to go.

I totally intend to give him every opportunity to continue improving his confidence and trust in people. Right now, most of the volunteers pet him a little bit and I work with him every day.

Please pray for GORDON as he stays on his journey to a beautiful life!

August 31, 2023 Update #8 Watch this video of Terry caring for Gordon and describing his recovery and very sweet demeanor!

Gordon cam through his full mouth extraction dental very well! All of his teeth were removed except one bottom canine, which was in good shape, and the other bottom canine. The 2nd bottom canine is broken, but Dr. Rockwell was worried about removing it. Some of the bone around the tooth might actually be helping to hold what is left of his jaw together!

He is tolerating my nursing care very well considering all he has been through. He surely would be dead by now just from infection alone if FURR had not rescued him!

Thanks AGAIN to CHRIS for alerting me to this poor cat’s condition!

Dental alone was over $1,000.  Please spread the word for tax-deductible HELP for Gordon!

August 24, 2023 Update #7 A few days ago, Gordon stopped eating.  I also noticed some blood on his front paws and he would become very agitated if I tried to examine him. I called Dr. Rockwell and she graciously agreed to work him in on an already busy day.

After sedating Gordon, he was examined and x-rayed.  It appeared that the wire holding his broken lower jaw together had not worked.  Unfortunately, the injury must have been much older than we thought and his jaw remained in two pieces despite the great effort of Dr. Rockwell and Dr. Gervais. At this point, Dr. Rockwell could see that the wire was bothering him (he has had it for 2 months) and it needed to be removed.

After removing the wire, Gordon’s teeth were still horrible and infected, so he is scheduled for his dental surgery next Thursday, Aug. 31. I hope and pray that Gordon can survive with TWO bottom jaws. He did eat his dinner of canned food, so that’s hopeful.  He still has a long way to go, but he has pain meds and antibiotics on board to help.

I’m sure that between this 3 hour appt and his dental surgery next Tuesday, that FURR will NOT have enough money.  Please spread the word, forward this email and help raise support for this poor kitty!

I long for the day that the worn, sad look in his blue eyes turns brighter.

July 29, 2023 Update #6 GORDON went for his 2 month checkup this week.  Unfortunately, his poor little face was swollen when he got his broken jaw wired together.  Over the last 2 months, the infection improved and swelling went down (which is good), but the wires loosened up.  His jaw, therefore, was not held quite as stable as needed.

The wires had to be tightened up again and he was sent back to FURR to wait ANOTHER month!  I was so sad for him and so disappointed he could not be freed of his pain.  He is still on pain meds, antibiotics and prebiotic.

I love and pet him every chance I get and try to tell him how special he is. His recovery expenses include:

    • His latest Vet visit to assess the healing of his jaw was $200.
    • His next visit will be another $200.
    • Then he will have dental surgery for broken teeth ($800-$1,000)
    • Finally, the fractured hip surgery ($800???)

Please continue to help us fundraise for his continued care. Thank you all so much!

June 29, 2023 Update #5 Gordan has his one month checkup at Sound Cat Clinic and all is well! Watch this video to hear more! He is healing nicely, eating all his food (medicines and all) and just being a wonderful patient!

Someone will be very lucky to Adopt this miracle cat because he is living proof that there CAN be life after DEATH!  This cat should have been dead with all that had happened to him.

GORDON goes back in another month to have the wires removed from his jaw.  Then, shortly after that, he will get his full mouth extraction to remove all of his broken & assessed teeth.

THEN, after that, we will need surgery on his fractured hip.

Pleeeeease remember that each checkup is just under $100 and we really need $$$ for his upcoming dental surgery!!!

    Terry

    >^,,^<

June 21, 2023 Update #4 Watch this touching video for Terry’s latest update on Gordon – he’s a good patient, eating as well as he can given the wires in his mouth and getting more handsome by the day!

June 10, 2023 Update #3 Terry has a great report for us now that Gordon is back at FURR!

I picked up GORDON late yesterday afternoon. He is doing well after surgery. I set up a large kennel for him at FURR so I could keep a close watch on him. GORDON is on 4 different meds and believe it or not, he is eating on his own with all his meds mixed in! HOORAY! He is getting plenty of clean water, mushy food mixed in with his meds twice a day and is using his litter box like a champ.

I have been talking to him, stroking his head and rubbing his back with no resistance.

The bill (although nothing to sneeze at) was much less than I anticipated at around $900. Any money we get donated over that amount will be used for his next 2 surgeries. In a couple of months, after his jaw has healed, GORDON will need dental surgery to remove damaged/decaying teeth, and “possibly” also surgery on his fractured hip. Thanks so much to all the generous donors who have raised $785 so far on Gordon’s Go Fund Me page, not counting the anonymous donor matching gifts up to $500. Given these additional surgeries ahead, please continue to help us support Gordon and raise awareness of his amazing rescue and rehabilitation story!

THANK YOU, CHRIS, FOR CALLING ME ABOUT THIS SUFFERING CAT!

THANK YOU, DR. ROCKWELL & DR. GERVAIS, FOR THEIR HEALING HANDS!!!

This kitty should be dead….but instead, he has been given a chance to live again!

June 10, 2023 Update #2 Good news! Gordon is resting comfortably at the vet’s office this weekend after successful surgery late yesterday, which required 2 wonderful Vets from Sound Cat Veterinary Hospital, Dr. Rockwell and Dr. Gervais, to wire his jaw back together after it was badly broken in 3 places. During this weekend at the Vet’s, Gordon is being watched closely and of course getting plenty of pain medication and antibiotics. Now that we know more about the extent of his jaw injuries, which was broken completely in half from front to back, Terry says today that she does not know how this kitty survived because of how painful it must of been to eat, even soft wet food.

The Vets also reported to Terry that his entire mouth was badly infected due to abscessed teeth and the jaw injury. The Vets also shaved his tail (while sedated) because it was completely matted and very dirty since poor Gordon has been unable to clean himself due to his jaw injuries. Terry says his fur-less tail makes him look a bit like a rat (LoL!), but even just that grooming treatment probably feels like a huge relief to Gordon!

Going forward, the Vets explain that Gordon’s recovery is a multi-step process. This kitty needs 8 weeks with the wires in his jaw, then 8 more weeks for the jaw to completely heal. After that, he’ll require dental surgery to remove bad teeth, which cannot be done now due to the fragility of his jaw. Eventually he’ll also need hip surgery.

We continue to be very grateful to Chris, who found Gordon and reached out to FURR, to Terry getting him trapped and to the vet, to everyone at Sound Cat for their wonderful, emergency care and of course to everyone who has generously donated $555 so far on Gordon’s Go Fund Me page, including an anonymous donor matching gifts up to $500! Terry says Gordon has gone along with all this care pretty well, considering he’s still feral. He’s certainly come a long way in just a few days. It truly takes a village! Please continue to help spread the word and encourage others to donate as well!

June 9, 2023 Update #1 Here are 2 photos after his first bath (while sedated!) and lo and behold he is a “flame point” – see the darker fur on his ears? Terry reports that the vet said that his bath water was black from all the fleas and red from the blood from the fleas biting him! Poor baby, but better already! Awaiting another update from Terry after his surgery soon, if the Vet cannot do it today.

    Original Story

Gordon at Rescue - June 2023
Gordon at Rescue – June 2023

June 8, 2023 Meet Gordon, FURR’s new “poster child”. This poor kitty is a perfect example of why Terry founded FURR many years ago and why she fights so hard day (and night!) for all the kitties who suffer so much when they’re left on their own!

    Gordon’s Story … So far

A kind, animal loving man named Chris recently noticed a feral cat near his home who appeared to be in really rough shape. Chris called FURR and Terry advised him to begin giving the kitty food and water and soon the kitty came around regularly. A good start, but you can see in the photo above that Chris had good reason to be concerned this kitty had many more needs besides food and water. Even now, though, we can see this kitty is a “diamond in the rough” with buff furr and blue eyes!

Terry worked with Chris to trap the kitty and Terry took him to our Vet, Sound Cat Veterinary Hospital in Wilmington, NC who diagnosed Gordon these medical issues – imagine Gordon’s pain and suffering for who knows how long!:

    Medical Issues:

Completely inundated with fleas and very anemic as a result
Jaw broken in 3 places in addition to rotten and abscessed teeth
    Severe ear infection
Bloodwork: FIV Positive (still adoptable!) and No Feline Leukemia (yeah!)
Fractured hip – old injury – approach/treatment TBD

Treatments given to date while sedated:
    De-flea-ed, deworm-ed and neutered
    Treated for Anemia
Surgery very soon to wire his jaw together
Pain and antibiotic injections that last a few days
    Microchipped
Bathed, as he was unable to clean himself due to his broken jaw and severe dental issues

    What we need:
Beyond Chris’s generous donation, we need $1,500 more for these treatments and planned jaw surgery.
Please donate via the Donate button on the right, or from Gordon’s Go Fund Me page
Posting to FURR’s Facebook page to help raise awareness of the need for funds for Gordon’s treatments
Chris has already has volunteered to foster Gordon during his recovery

Update 16: Good news and sad news

    FURRs-new-sanctuary-April-2024
    New sanctuary-04/24

Update #16 July 26, 2024 The good news is that the new FURR sanctuary is now up and running, so these kitties are finally enjoying their purrr-fect place in peace and comfort after Terry recently spent weeks getting all of them vetted as part of the process of moving them from old to new locations.

The sad news is that we lost Atlantic, a beloved member of this community on July 24, 2024. Here is is story a only Terry can tell it…

    Atlantic – early July 2024

The kitty, named “Atlantic”, had seemed lethargic for a week or so.  I noticed him sleeping a lot.  Then I noticed some other tell tell signs of him not feeling well such as his 3rd eyelid up.  He seemed to be losing weight although he was eating? Atlantic was sleeping in the same spot for a while and I could see something was wrong.  I managed to catch him with my net this morning and take him to Sound Cat.

Dr. Rockwell called me with the bad news that he was in either liver or kidney failure.  There was really no hope of helping him and he was becoming jaundice (which I could not tell from a distance).  Dr. Rockwell gently and professionally told me the bad news.  I know I’ve had Atlantic at least 2 years while waiting to open the new sanctuary.

I’m so sad that he will not get to enjoy living more years there. He surely didn’t deserve to pass so young.  He was only a few years old. Please say a prayer for Atlantic.  I’m really struggling with why this had to happen to him.

“Seafood facility colony” rescue – Summer 2023

Update #15 July 6, 2023 I’m sitting out at the seafood plant trying to lure the last 2 kitties to my feeding station. I hope to trap them in the next few days, but the fireworks may frighten them to death, so praying that they are still around after tomorrow so I can try to save them.

Really hoping these are, indeed, the LAST two kitties out of DOZENS that I have saved at this horrible place soon to be torn down.

I have about 25 cats in my makeshift pen at my house from the seafood place. ALL are waiting for a better place to be to live out their lives. My pen is small and the shed is small, but at least I know the cats are fed twice a day, litter cleaned twice a day, plenty of clean water provided and I have several fans going in the shed and recently bought a small portable air conditioner. I keep hoping the A/C will not throw a power surge. Although it is NOT working as well as I had hoped, at least it is not 100 degrees in the shed. Most of the cats stay in the loft area up high, but that is the hottest part of the shed. I’m doing everything I can to keep them safe & comfortable.

I built some large building blocks for them to use to get up to the loft.

These cats mean the world to me and I need to get them to a new sanctuary ASAP!

Peeking down at me as I fix their food & fill their water pans,…..such sweet innocent kitties !

Update #14 June 8, 2023 Crappie’s dental surgery in late May was successful! This kitty is undoubtedly feeling MUCH better by now, several days into recovery! More updates soon on other needs previously noted, but for now let’s enjoy this accomplishment!

Update #13 May 7, 2023 Last night was a LONG night & today spent taking cats & helping my niece…

    Crappie – May 2023

Caught THREE cats last night at the seafood place!!!  Thought there were only a couple cats left & low & behold, I CAUGHT THREE!!! Took all night, but all 3 got fixed today at the WONDERFUL Cape Fear Spay/Neuter Clinic in Castle Hayne, and all 3 tested negative & got all the vet work needed.  One of the cats had been trapped & released by me a couple years ago & I was THRILLED she had lived a couple years & still alive to be rescued again!!! Today’s bill for the 3 trapped & rescued kitties from last night was $500+.  All 3 kitties tested negative.  They got all their shots, blood testing, etc.  PLEASE help if u can!!!

I am out here again tonight trying desperately to save the last couple of kitties before this fish production plant is leveled out to become a hotel!!! God help me save the last couple of kitties…..they have no idea what’s coming. Still have mama kitty being monitored with a GPS tracking collar, but cannot find kittens yet & MUST find kittens before re-trapping mama

I am sitting out here again tonight going after a tough catch…..wish me luck!!!..

Here are pics from today. Thanks for prayers & well wishes for these sweeeet babies!!!

    Terry

Update #12 May 16, 2023 Poor Crappie has been waiting for weeks to get her dental at Sound Cat.  She is in horrible pain & can barely eat.  NOW that her appt is about here, ALL of Sound Cat’s dental equip is broken!  They have no idea when it will all be replaced! So we’ve scheduled it to be done at Atlantic Animal Hospital (AAH) on May 23rd instead!

Meanwhile, I have another FERAL cat that I trapped named “Salty” and when sedated & updating his shots, etc., I was told that he ALSO needs a dental!!! I’ll schedule his dental while I am at AAH with Crappie.

Update #11 May 13, 2023 Trapped & rescued THREE kitties last week from the seafood place! Got a tortie female (shown left) & a black female (shown right) that have migrated over to behind the attorney’s office !!! Both of these kitties have been trapped before & have tipped ears. I took both of them to the vet to get them updated on their shots, blood testing & flea/worm treatment. They both tested negative & I currently have them in my garage recovering from their trauma.

The other blue/gray Russian blue-looking kitty with a big white spot on his chest (shown left) is the spitting image of Perch! He is definitely a younger sibling & his microchip tells me that his name is “Blue Marlin”! He is one that I trapped & TNR’d before & now trapped again to save him from the seafood place! Blue Marlin was also transported by me to the vet for updating his shots, etc., but he had a special look in his eyes???

He seemed grateful for being rescued & I could just tell he was submitting to me. He blinked at me and didn’t run away when I slowly reached out to pet him…I took him to FURR. I think this one will be adoptable quickly! I offered him some kitty treats. He had NO idea what to do with them. I got this adorable picture of him after sticking 2 treats up under his 💋 lips! What a cutie!!! I just love him already!!!

Well, it’s gonna be a long night….sitting out here alone with traps set. Please pray for me & the kitties! Only 4 or 5 left to save!!!

    It’s been a journey!!!

    Crappies-painful-dental-issues-April-2023
    Crappie’s-painful-dental-issues-April-2023

Update #10 May 3, 2023 Crappie’s full mouth dental surgery is in 2 weeks (on waiting list for sooner!).  Generous donations have very thankfully come in, but at least half the funds are still needed. She is in pain and the Vet’s bill will be at least $800 – $1,000. The above photo of her shows how she holds her mouth open due to her painful dental issues. She is in a kennel in my garage with her sister (Cuttlefish) to keep her company.

Update #9 April 23, 2023 URGENT!!! “CRAPPIE” (like the fish) is one of the black ferals I trapped, fixed, recovered & put in my small temporary pen in my backyard (shown at the left and top of the page). I noticed that she was staying in a corner & she was holding her head up like she was trying to breathe! I managed to get a net on her & get her in a crate.  We went straight to the vet.  I was very worried especially since Crappie is one of the FIV+ cats.

The vet said Crappie has Horrible URI! Rotten teeth! Broken teeth! Infected gums! POOR KITTY!  She surely would have died had she not been rescued. After sedation, x-rays, antibiotic shot, pain meds, etc., the bill was $300. Now Crappie is on the wait list for FULL MOUTH EXTRACTIONS which will run $800-$1,000! Please help us raise the money for Crappie!  These kind of emergencies really wipe out our funds. Please say a prayer that she will be ok & get her dental surgery soon! Bless all of you that care so much!

Update #8 April 25, 2023 Caught 2 cats Sunday night at the seafood place.  One was an older orange tabby that looked like he had been ridden hard & put up wet…..poor thing!  So happy I got him!  He has probably lived at that plant for years.  Vet said he was about 5-6 years old; which is REALLY old for a feral kitty.  I call him “Tang Fish” (shown left), which yes, is really a fish!

The 2nd cat I trapped was the mama cat, Sunfish (see below) that I have been following on GPS!  Darn it!  I didn’t want to re-trap her until I found her kittens!  I had to release her….

Please help me raise the money for CRAPPIE, the little black feral that needs all her teeth pulled!!!  Any fundraising ideas are GREATLY appreciated! See Update #8 below for details.

Update #7 April 15, 2023 You guys are wonderful & FURR could not exist without you!!! It takes a village as my WONDERFUL volunteers look after the FURR Kitties: Fran, Tony, Patti, Kathy, Laura, Kristy and Lynn.

Still looking constantly for the feral mama cat & her babies.  The tracking collar we have on her is working, but she is going into the woods, so I can’t find her.  Hopefully the kittens will surface soon & I can catch them, use them as bait to re-catch the mama cat.

Update #6 April 8, 2023 Another late night. Trying to find mama kitty with my GPS collar on!  Spent hours today hunting for her in the woods, to no avail….but know she & (hopefully) kittens are nearby.  Will NOT give up on rescuing them.

MANY HEARTFELT THANKS THE AMAZING FOLKS THAT HAVE SENT DONATIONS!!!! FURR is beyond grateful & YOU ARE HELPING TO SAVE LIVES!!!

The seafood colony is down to probably a dozen or less cats that need to be saved.  Each day more & more of the infrastructure is GONE & the cats have less places to hide & be protected. Pray that I can trap the rest if the cats to save them.  I’m doing my very best which is never enough.

    Update #5 April 6, 2023 It’s been a harrowing few days….

My sister, Fran, generously came to help me get a GPS tracking collar on the feral, Sunfish (shown left) I had fixed yesterday.  The vet said she had kittens & that’s the worst news any rescuer can get. She had just been spayed, so we had to give her 24 hours before releasing her.

Tonight she was fighting us big time & she certainly had reason to, but with Fran’s help we got her in a cat bag, managed to get her head popped out & got the collar on her. I am not as brave as I used to be after the deep bite down to the bone in my hand.  I was hospitalized for 10 days, had major surgery & was told I might lose my hand. God healed me & I’m 95% back to normal BUT try to get help now rather than doing it all by myself.

My sister feels for my passion for saving these cats in this colony.  After a 10 hr daouy at work as a cardiac nurse, she came to help me. We followed mom cat on the GPS after releasing her tonight & she ran straight for some nearby woods & stopped. We will monitor her movement but hope & pray she is with her kittens and that they are still alive. We will hopefully rescue mom & babies soon. Say a prayer for “Sunfish” and her babies.

Got 4 traps set tonight & keep checking on them.  Another long one….

Update #4 April 3, 2023 Terry shares good news in this progress to report –

The 12 cats I have rescued from the seafood colony are doing fairly well in my makeshift rescue shed & pen. I’m so worried about the other ones left out there & I am out trying to trap them tonight. I have 6 traps set & hope & pray for them to let me save them.

Most of the containers & equipment that they have lived under for YEARS is all gone. The cats are aimlessly running around the roads & parking lots. There are at least 20 more I need to save, so as wait and watch these traps tonight I pray for more donations to pay for them to be vetted, treated, then cared for until adopted…

    Update #3 April 1, 2023

I would like to thank the folks that have given their precious time to help the FURR ferals. I have re-captured twelve FURR feral cats from the seafood colony & have had them in cages in my garage.

With the help of the following people, I have finally been able to move the cats into a small shed & outdoor pen shown on this page.  It is small and far from perfect, but at least they can move around, climb up into the loft area & step outside for some fresh air. This was the best that I could do for now.

    THANK YOU & BLESS YOU!

Fran (my sister, adopter, volunteer & my right arm!)
Tony (my brother-in-law who has helped numerous times with FURR projects!)
Jim (adopted one of our FURR cats “Hooters” & volunteered his time & skills to help!)
John – (neighbor who volunteered to help!)
Kristy & Jimmy (friends, adopters, fosters & volunteers)
Robert (who poured the concrete slab & helped!)

Update #2 March 31, 2023 Many heartfelt thanks to all those who have donated so far and helped to make our cozy new shed happen! Because of your generous donations, these kitties are getting the warmth, safety, care, food and love they deserve.

But there are still a dozen more ferals in need of rescue from a dangerous construction/destruction zone, so Terry is working very hard to rescue them while caring for current FURR kitties.

So here are our current most critical needs:

    • $500 Rent due
    • $150 Utilities due
    • $ 75 Insurance due
    • $850 Mama Hoover needs a teeth cleaning
    • $2,400 needed for final dozen feral cats that need to be trapped, rescued and vetted!
    • We needs lots of food:
      • Currently feeding 2 cases of canned food a day
        • Fancy Feast SEAFOOD
        • Friskees SEAFOOD

Bless you all & Thank you for helping the kitties!

    Terry
    >^,,^<

Update #1 March 8, 2023 Money is trickling in and I am GRATEFUL! We still don’t have enough to catch up or to sustain us, but I was able to pay the rent & other bills that were behind plus continuing, as money comes in, to trap the kitties at the colony.

I have spent night after night trying to re-catch those kitties and it is quite frustrating! I had trapped them all before, got them completely vetted, and put them back in their safe environment with a caretaker feeding them.

Now, they are so “trap savvy” that they do NOT want to go back in the traps! Time is CRITICAL at the moment because of the business leaving, tearing down buildings, taking away all of the containers that the cats have called home for many years. Please say a prayer that I can catch the remaining dozen or so QUICKLY!!!

In total desperation of what to do with all of these cats (over a dozen in small cages in my garage) I purchased a small shed, had it insulated and will use that for the cats to stay protected. At least they can move around a little bit and much better than small cages.

Pouring slab for outdoor space for kitties March 2023

I also bought 2 large chicken pens (see image at the top) and put them together to give them an small outside run. A good friend is pouring a slab for me today to help attach the chicken pens to (see left). I’m doing the best I can and don’t have a lot of money to spend. It has been an ongoing project &and worry for months after learning back in November that the cats were being abandoned.

Wish me luck as I continue to look for the light at the end of the tunnel.

(Still working on a land situation…….will be called “FURR FERALS” & will be the last thing on my bucket list! If I accomplish that, I can die happy!)

    Bless you all,
    Terry

March 1, 2023 THIS IS URGENT!!!  I have asked for money, donations, food, etc., for years, but now I AM BEGGING FOR HELP!!!  There are two major issues going on with FURR that could completely wipe us out.  I have a VISION and it could happen, but right now I AM DESPERATE FOR HELP!  I feel all alone and that I am failing.  I am quickly going down.

    FURR ADOPTABLE KITTIES:

We have been lucky in the past and blessed that I had a building I could off the FURR cats up for adoption.  I do not have that luxury now and am having to rent a place for the cats to stay.  My dear friend (bless her!!!) has given me a commercial office space to house the kitties, but FURR is having trouble making ends meet.  We have never had these additional expenses before and now the few donations we get on a monthly basis are gone before I can even buy food.  We have vet bills, food bills, litter bills, supply bills, etc., and ALL of that is before these monthly additions:

    RENT $500 (1/2 price!)

    UTILITIES $150

    INSURANCE $75

    INTERNET (needed for security) $59

SECURITY (needed in the area where we are) $111

FURR IS NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP!  WE DESPERATELY NEED MORE REGULAR MONTHLY DONATIONS TO HELP!!!  THIS IS ALL FOR THE KITTIES’ SAKES!!!  WE HAVE ABOUT 25 CATS READY FOR ADOPTION AND THEY NEED OUR HELP!

    NEXT HUGE FURR PROJECT:

FURR FERALSOriginal Story from August 2022

In the last few years here in the Hampstead (north of Wilmington) I have trapped, fixed and released HUNDREDS of cats.  One of the biggest colonies has about 40-50 cats.  A man has been feeding them & giving them fresh water, but I single handedly trapped ALL of these cats and had them taken care of.  This is one of several colonies that I have saved and many of the colony cats (as many as I could take in within limits) were brought to FURR and adopted out.

NOW, THIS LARGE COLONY IN HAMPSTEAD IS LOSING ITS HOME!  The property has been SOLD!  THE BUILDINGS ARE BEING TORN DOWN, THE PLACES WHERE THESE CATS HAVE BEEN SAFE FOR YEARS ARE SLOWLY DISAPPEARING!  ALL OF THE CATS ARE IN DANGER & SOME HAVE ALREADY TAKEN OFF & HAVE DISAPPEARED!

FURR put hundreds of dollars into helping these cats.  Many have disappeared.

I am trapping almost every night trying to save them before they run away or get killed in the highway.  The colony is directly in the middle of two MAJOR HIGHWAYS…..  The cats are NOT wanting to get back into the traps, but I have managed to capture about a dozen so far (over the last 2-3 months), but THESE CATS ARE IN SMALL CAGES IN MY GARAGE!  THEY ARE DESPERATE TO GET OUT!!!

I have spent thousands of my own money, to the extent that I can, and I bought a shed with a dog pen to go around the shed.  I NEED TO GET THESE CATS OUT OF THEIR SMALL CAGES & PUT THEM IN THIS PEN!!!

I NEED VOLUNTEERS TO HELP!  I AM OUT OF MONEY!  FURR IS OUT OF MONEY!

ELECTRICIAN came and did not finish.  Now doesn’t have time to come back and finish!  I need electrician ASAP!!!

THE CONTRACTOR came out and did not finish.  Now doesn’t have time to come back and finish.  I need a CONTRACTOR ASAP to help me attach the pen to the building and to help me with wire and other things to make it safe for the cats & so they cannot escape.

There doesn’t seem to be anyone that wants to help by donating their time.  All of these things cost money and I need VOLUNTEER HELP.

PLEASE, I AM AT THE END OF MY HOPE.  I HAVE A VISION FOR THESE CATS, BUT I CANNOT DO IT ALONE.  THERE ARE AT LEAST 25 MORE CATS THAT NEED TO BE REMOVED FROM THE COLONY LOCATION BEFORE ALL OF THE CATS ARE DEAD.  MY GARAGE IS PACKED.  I NEED THE PEN TO AT LEAST GIVE THEM SAFETY AND A LITTLE ROOM TO MOVE AROUND.

I have another project I am working on to get a little land.  A very kind doctor is talking with me about it.  He is also a cat lover and I have trapped and fixed HIS entire colony of cats behind his office.  If I do get use of the land, ALL of these misplaced ferals can live there.

I HAVE A VISION!  I JUST NEED TO GET THERE!

THANK YOU ALL AND BLESS ANYONE WILLING TO SEND:

    VOLUNTEER HELP

MONEY (WE ARE OUT OF MONEY AS OF TODAY)

    DONATED MATERIALS

    CONTRACTOR HELP

    ELECTRICAL HELP

    DONATIONS OF FOOD!!!

    LITTER DONATIONS

GIFT CARDS:  PETSMART, ACE HARDWARE, WALMART, AMAZON

In between working on these LARGE ISSUES day and night, I have had a few adoptions which are the blessings and light I need to see at the end of the tunnel.  As soon as I can sit down at the computer again, I will update you all on those.  Wonderful, wonderful homes for our adoptable FURR kitties.

PLEASE POST, FORWARD AND TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW ABOUT THESE 2 SITUATIONS TO HELP FURR!  THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU.

    TERRY
