Sheba with New Mom Pat – May 2017

UPDATE MAY 2017: SHEBA IS ADOPTED MAY 2017!

Mary, one of the FURR Volunteers, had called me about 2 more young kitties dumpted at her aunt’s house in Gastonia.  I agreed that she could take them in and rescue them as long as she was willing to foster them temporarily until I had room at the lodge.  Mary only had the cats a few weeks and FURR had them spayed, tested, shots, etc., but Mary agreed to bring them to the PetSmart weekend.  Low and behold, BOTH kitties got adopted!!!  Sheba had a million phone calls, but ended up in the perfect home with a wonderful couple that had one young adult cat that is also a lilac point or Siamese mix!  Their current kitty is very docile and the couple wanted a friend to keep him company.  WELL, it didn’t take long for SHEBA to adjust to her new home & all is absolutely PURRFECT!!!  We are so happy for SHEBA and her new home!!!

    ORIGINAL ADOPTION STORY

We have rescued beautiful Sheba! She was definitely in danger being outside, so FURR has taken in the sweet young female kitty. We do believe she was left behind by people who moved away, leaving this poor girl to try to survive all on her own after being a member of their family!  She is sweet, but a little shy and is a unique looking snow show (Siamese mix).

For adoption information or to schedule a visit to the FURR lodge to meet this kitty please email Terry at adoptafurrcat@gmail.com.

New Mom Kathryn with Danny, Joey & Johnathan - May-2017
New Mom Kathryn with Danny, Joey & Johnathan – May-2017

Two of the kittens are going to a wonderful family that already has one older kitty and 2 sweet puppy dogs AND two

older kids!  Mom is a realtor and the entire family just loves animals!  JORDAN & DONNIE were adopted by this family and these kittens will be able to leave around the 1st of June.  As soon as they have their 2nd vet visit and 2nd booster shot, they will be ready to go!  Mama Hissy Fit needs to gain some weight and stop nursing all these babies soon!  Right now Hissy is spending days in room 7 and nights in with the kittens.  I am working on slowing weaning them from her.  All is going well, and believe it or not, Hissy just LOVES being in the teenage room (since she is one herself) and she seems so much happier and relaxed in there!!!  Please spend time with her if you can!  This is a picture of the two older kids adopting JORDAN & DONNIE!!!  WISH them all a good life and lots of fun!!!

The other 3 kittens, JOHNATHAN, JOEY & DANNY are being adopted by a former FURR client that already has 2 of our cats…..FERN & MYRTLE!!!  Kathryn decided that she really wanted at least ONE kitten, but when she met the gang, she just couldn’t decide between the 3 unadopted kittens, so she decided to take all three!!!  Kathryn is a wonderful cat MOM and she is taking wonderful care of FERN & MYRTLE!  She tells me that FERN is still very shy, but absolutely gorgeous and totally in love with her senior kitty!  MYRTLE is sweet, loving and absolutely stunning!  She will now have 6 kitties, but that’s ok for Kathryn!  She lives alone and her kitties are her family!  She will soon be surrounded with lots of purrs & biscuits!!!  Look at this cute picture of Kathryn with her 3 new babies!!!  All the kittens should be leaving by the first of June!!!

    ORIGINAL ADOPTION STORY

Three weeks ago this coming Saturday (around 4/1), a rescuer friend of mine (Huanita) asked me to foster a feral mama kitty about to POP with kittens.  The mama cat had been trapped in Rock Hill and was going to be turned into A/C to be euthanized. She was feral, so no one wanted to deal with her, but I agreed to take her in until she had her babies.  Two days after receiving her, she had 5 little boy kittens! The kittens will be 3 weeks old on 4/22/17. They are fat, happy and wanting to play!  It has been a joy watching them grow.  Thanks to Angela for being here right after they were born to make sure all went well – she was the first one to see them!!!

We have named the 5 boys after the “New Kids on the Block” band, so we have the following:
    • BUFF KITTEN is “Jonathan”
    • GRAY TABBY KITTEN is “Donnie”
    • BLACK KITTEN W/WHITE PAWS is “Danny”
    • ORANGE TABBY KITTEN is “Joey”
    • LILAC POINT KITTEN is “Jordan”

These kittens are now available for adoption now, as of mid-April, however they will not be old enough to be ready for delivery to their new families for a few more weeks.  If someone is willing to take the Mama Kitty along with one of her babies, we will reduce the adoption fee which is $150 per kitten (which includes all vet work & more!)

The kittens have already graduated to another big container and tomorrow they will graduate again to an even larger container!   Before long, they will have run of the entire room & we all know how much fun (and how challenging!) that is! Mama is getting a lot better about being petted. She needs a LOT of loving, petting & reassurance.  She is getting sweeter every day and a lot more trusting of us coming into her room!

Like all FURR kitties, these kitties are fully vetted with vaccinations and spaying/neutering by the time they are delivered to their adoptive families. The Adoption fee also includes Microchipping to an approved home only!

For adoption information or to schedule a visit to the FURR lodge to meet this kitty, please email FURR President and Founder, Terry Schultz, at adoptafurrcat@gmail.coom.

If you are not ready to adopt a kitty, please consider fostering or sponsoring. All donations are tax deductible.

  • Jeffrey – Cat of the Month

Jeffrey – Cat of the Month

Adopted in July 2017 – Story coming soon!

BIG BOY “JEFFREY” needs a home!  This large stately kitty is GORGEOUS with his very soft silver gray fur and his amazing eyes!  This kitty is SUPER friendly and is just shy of 20 pounds of “purrage”!  He is really attached to ANYONE that will give him the time of day and he will follow you if you try to leave him!

JEFFREY is just recently rescued and is starved for love and attention!  This is the kitty that showed up (more than likely dumped!) behind my friend, Donna’s, plastic surgeon’s office in Matthews where she works.  I really don’t think he was feral.  He hid from her for about 2 weeks before he would come close to her, but she was feeding him every day even though he kept his distance.  Finally, he started approaching her and even started rubbing her legs; but he was quite nervous, anxious and worried.

After she got him and brought him to the FURR lodge for rehab, I figured out really quick that he just doesn’t want to be left.  He was associating the food coming from her with her leaving.  He turned out to be a very kind and gentle cat that just needed to feel secure and loved.  He did not want to be alone and he started out running after me when I would go to leave his room.  I decided to feed him and stay with him for a long while before leaving.  Soon, he stopped trying to bite me and just settled down after eating to take a bath.  He worried less and less as I spent more time with him and stayed longer each time.

Now I can pick him up, put him in my lap and rub him lots!  This humongous cat is quite threatening looking but deep down inside, he is a very insecure and lonely fellow. Every day he is improving and getting more content.  He has slowed down his fast movements and has mellowed out.  He now goes into rooms 5 & 6 to hang out.  He used to just sit in there with all the other cats while growling the entire time.  Now, he hardly growls at all.  He is realizing that he is safe, loved quite often, fed LOTS and that the other cats are no threat to him, his food or his safety. He has a good healthy appetite and comes totally vetted, neutered, etc.  Jeffrey is about 2 years old, but let’s hope he doesn’t get any bigger!  This is a lot of cat to love, so prepare to be head-butted and rubbed on by him! I think this beautiful cat will make a wonderful pet!  He truly loves to be loved and just needs time and confidence.

Jeffrey would do best in a household with no other kitties. He has come a long way & pretty much ignores the other cats now, but if they come too close, he will go after them a bit.

  • Tux Adopted!

    Tux Adopted!

4/30/2019: Tux and Topaz are Adopted together!! Best Friends will now live together in a FURRever home!!!!

This is a tough one for me to type since I feel like these two cats are FAMILY!!! I can’t imagine the lodge without being greeted by TUX every day! He is the lover boy of the century and has been our mascot for the past SEVERAL years!!!

BUT, it is so unfair to keep them at FURR in one little room when there is a family out there that wants them! It took me quite a while to be able to approve of someone “worthy” enough to take these two kitties! I think this is a beautiful and wonderful fit!

The couple that adopted HISSY & PEPE are in love with their two new additions! HISSY & PEPE are doing GREAT and I will send you some pictures in a separate email. During this adoption, I met their daughter (Abby Grace) who was about to graduate from Liberty with her nursing degree. She has already landed a great job in Rock Hill, SC! Abby Grace is graduating this month and then taking a week vacation with her family. When she returns, she will be living with her parents for a year to save money & get her own place. She has a long term boyfriend that I met also and his name is Mike.

When AG and Mike come to FURR to visit Tux & Topaz, Mike has made an amazing connection with Topaz! He brushes her and pets her and she really likes him! It is so wonderful to see her happy! TUX and TOPAZ will live in the upstairs of the house for a while and Hissy and Pepe will live downstairs for a while……..I am sure they will all get along and be fine after a few weeks of adjustment period!

TUX & TOPAZ are leaving on Monday, May 20th. I may need someone to go with me since I will be a total mess leaving them. This is so wonderful for these two cats that have waited SO LONG for a home! It is bittersweet to me & I already cry at the drop of a hat thinking of them being gone from FURR……….

    Look at these amazing pictures!!!

    Tux’s Original Story

TUX, a big, beautiful and very special boy, was in terrible condition when he was rescued and brought to the FURR facility.  He was covered with fleas and parasites, his fur was scruffy, had bald spots, and in addition to other problems his teeth required extensive dental work and several of his nail beds were badly infected.  TUX was not only in severe pain, he was also a very shy and frightened boy.

But after months of rehabilitation and tender loving care, he has made a remarkable improvement both physically and mentally, and is now healthy, handsome, loves attention, and interacts well with volunteers and other kitties.  He is on a healthy diet and eating up a storm, his coat is clean and shiny, and most importantly, TUX is happy, responsive and playful – he has grown strong, learned not to be afraid anymore, realizes how much he’s loved, and purrs to beat the band when getting attention!

All of us at FURR are so happy to see how much progress this sweet boy has made – not only health wise, but his personality as well.  He is not the same shy, sick and depressed kitty who arrived at the facility.  But as much as we all love him, we know it is only fair that he has the chance to move on to a caring forever home.  If you are looking for a big, beautiful boy, TUX is the kitty for you!  Please come to visit him – you will see how he got his name and how gentle he is. We know you will fall in love and hopefully decide to share your love and home with him.

FURR (Feline Urgent Rescue and Rehab), which the North Carolina Agricultural Extension Agency has rated the number one cat rescue facility in a twelve county district, is a nonprofit organization whose goal is to rescue homeless and/or feral cats and prepare them for adoption. Once rescued the cats are brought to the FURR rescue facility where they are fully vetted – spayed/neutered and tested for feline aids, leukemia and heartworm disease, kept up to date with all their shots, and are tamed and socialized in a cage free environment.  When ready they are put up for adoption to carefully screened homes only in Charlotte and the surrounding area.  FURR’s Adoption fee also includes Microchipping!

  • Tori

    Tori

UPDATE MAY 2017: TORI IS ADOPTED BY Mary, her long time Foster Mom

During PetSmart weekend (last weekend) Mary and I talked about her adopting her 2 long-term foster kitties, Hudson and Tori.  We decided that would be best since she had them SO long and we did not have any potential adopters for them.

Poor little Tori had gone downhill a lot in the last few weeks, and we took her for an evaluation that came back showing severe dental disease.  FURR paid for extensive dental cleaning and extractions to help her get better, but unfortunately, it was too late.  Little Tori (only a short time after Mary “officially” adopted her) passed away this morning (5/17/17).  We are all very sad about losing Tori to what appeared to be pancreatic disease.  We feel like Tori might have been older that what the vet’s thought, but at least she had a few good “indoor” years being taken care of and loved by Mary and having all of her vet needs taken care of by FURR.  Tori was a guest at my house several times and stayed in our guest room with Mary.  I had grown very fond of her also and it is a tough & sad loss.  Please say a prayer for Tori and for Mary to help her in this time of grieving.

    ORIGINAL ADOPTION STORY

Tori is a very unique looking kitty. She has splotches of orange on her black coat with a few spots of white.

What makes her even more special is her kind humble personality.  Watch her video!

When Tori was rescued she had been surviving outside on her own for a while. She experienced some trauma to her right ear and part of it is missing. I can’t imagine what this poor little girl has been through. She is so grateful to be rescued and loves living inside. She is very affectionate and loves head butts and back rubs. She gets along with other kitties, is very laid back and never causes a fuss. She is an all around perfect girl. She is about 3 years old.

Like all FURR kitties, this kitty is fully vetted with vaccinations and spaying/neutering. The Adoption fee also includes Microchipping to an approved home only!

    Update November 2016

A lovely lady came to the lodge yesterday.  Her name is Mary Ann and she just recently lost her senior kitties.  She waited a little while and is now ready for a new family.  Mary Ann is single and needs to fill her life with more kitties!  She fell in LOVE with Bogie and Bunker and adopted them!  Mary Ann had orange tabby kitties and just loved that the “twins” looked a lot like her kitties!  The twins were super sweet, loving, playful and completely “purrfect”, of course, since they were raised at FURR!  Mary Ann got RAVE reviews from her vet and she is super excited!  I was elated, but didn’t shed a tear?  Strange for me, but I feel it will come when I actually have to say goodbye to them.  She is taking delivery next Thursday.  I remember the day these kittens were born!  It has been an amazing journey with Mama Sun City Kitten and her entire rescue.  Now, after Bogie & Bunker leave, Putt Putt will be the only one left!  We will take her to PetSmart this weekend and hopefully, someone will love her as much as we do!  Isn’t this amazing news???  I am sooooooooo happy for the sweet boys!!!

UPDATE MAY 2017: GABBY and MICKEY GO TO THEIR NEW HOME

Yesterday (5/19/17) was a good day, but mixed with LOTS of emotions!  Late morning I took GABBY & MICKEY to their new home!!!  I am thrilled that they could go together!  The new excited parents, Melinda & Royce, are empty nesters and have been without pets for a short time…..but, they were ready to open up their home to more furry friends and I personally think that they hit the jackpot!  You could never find two sweeter kitties than these two!  Reports from the new home are all good!  Gabby and Mickey are snuggled in the laundry room (safe room), but Gabby has actually come out a couple of times to explore a little before heading back to his safe room!  Mickey is TOTALLY depending on Gabby for comfort and direction!  He hangs back and waits to see what Gabby is going to do!

Both kitties are playing, talking and even hugging each other when sleeping!  It is so sweet I can hardly stand it!  Poor Gabby was returned to the lodge after being adopted as a kitten.  I am so glad that after waiting another (almost) TWO years, he has an opportunity to be loved and move on with his life!  I think all will work extremely well with this match and Melinda & Royce seem totally committed to the kitties’ long-term happiness!!!  I did actually cry on the way home and still do when I think of Gabby not being at the lodge…..gosh darn it is hard to say goodbye!!!  I really loved him and we ALL went through so much with him!!!  HOORAY!!!

    ORIGNIAL ADOPTION POSTING:

GABBY is an AMAZING cat and truly loved by FURR volunteers!  Watch his Video!

He is very special to us and was rescued from a terrible situation…TWICE! GABBY was a tiny kitten about to be euthanized when rescued from a high kill animal control facility by FURR.  He was adopted and lived in a big house with children and other animals.  But a sad reality happened, as it does on rare occasions – he was returned to FURR when he grew up and wasn’t a cute little kitten any more.  He is very homesick and wants a life outside of FURR.

GABBY has had a rough young life.  He actually went through surgery for a broken jaw and never complained once – he just purred through the entire surgery and complete recovery!  He is so very sweet, we know you will fall in love with him.

GABBY is one of the most beautiful and gentle cats we have ever had and all the FURR volunteers adore him!  GABBY is unique with his soft white coat and rust colored markings!  This gentle, loving soul gets along well with other cats, people and children!  We’re not sure, but think he would like dogs too!  He is absolutely amazing and would be a wonderful addition to any home.  He just loves to be petted, held, brushed or ANYTHING where he is getting attention! All he needs is LOVE!!!

Gabby is a very young adult and really needs a family to love.   You will DEFINITELY fall in love with him when you meet him and all the FURR volunteers will surely cry when he leaves our rescue!  This is one special kitty in many, many ways!!! Please consider giving this wonderful, sweet boy the special forever home he deserves, he will reward you with lots of love, fun and joy in return. You won’t be sorry – guaranteed!

Like all FURR kitties, this kitty is fully vetted with vaccinations and spaying/neutering. The Adoption fee also includes Microchipping to an approved home only!
