  • Mary Kay is Adopted!

    Mary Kay is Adopted!

A wonderful adoption just occurred! Melissa Madden (and her sister, Susan Quick) just few to Wilmington! Melissa and Susan volunteered for FURR for YEARS. Melissa moved to Florida. She used to help me in the FURR office with EVERYTHING and I have never caught up since she left! I miss her all the time! Susan was a wonderful volunteer who made our FURR table cloths, chair covers, helped with fundraisers and all kinds of volunteering!

Melissa fell in love with Mary Kay, one of my little kittens rescued from the Hampstead colony that I have been working on. Melissa and Susan flew up to Wilmington and I picked them up at the airport. Melissa adopted Mary Kay, and after having lunch and spending some time all together again, the two ladies flew home. Mary Kay was exposed to all kinds of new things including transport by plane!

I am so happy for my little kitten and know that she will have a great home and be forever loved! It was just meant to be! Melissa had rescued another little kitten about the same age as Mary Kay, so the two kittens will have each other to play with and grow up with.

January 9, 2020 I have been amazed at how well the FURR kitties have done and how happy they are!  WOO HOO! Brevard, Labella, Lillie Rae & Socks are doing great and I am loving on them every spare minute.  They are becoming much more social Socks, especially, is just SO HAPPY!  She rolls around, purrs all the time, loves her belly rubs and is happy as can be!
I am picking up Brevard every day and she is getting really used to it!  She LOVES little nibbles of cheese!  Labella & Lillie Rae are both improving rapidly.  I visit them several times a day and just rub & kiss on them!  It is going great! Pinky has been wonderful!  He seems to just LOVE being in the middle of all the craziness of the kittens jumping all over him and he just seems to be going with the flow!  I am hoping I can adopt him out soon!  Hooters is always not far from Pinky and she is super sweet, loving to be petted and scratched! The 3 kittens just had their 2nd booster shots.  and are doing great. Mary just got spayed at the Cape Fear Neuter Clinic.  They did an amazing job!  Chatty Cathy and Persimmon are still just a teensy shy, but really doing very very well!!! I am so thankful for the great adjustment of the cats!

    Peek-a-Boo: Successful Surgery and Adoption!

    June 23, 2019 – Peekaboo is Adopted!!
Wonderful news!! Check back soon for his adoption story!

June 14, 2019 Update – Eye Surgery Successful!
The fundraiser for the past two weeks was a quick success, then the eye surgeon had a cancellation and …. Viola! We now have a great photo of Terry with Peek-a-boo today right after surgery!!! Terry reports that all went well and he is doing great! Let’s look forward to more updates soon on how much he is enjoying life – pain free – with his mom and siblings!!

Original Post June 3, 2019 – This kitten is in PAIN!
He is so tiny, but this injury/ulceration on his eye looks horrible. Terry Schultz, FURR’s President, discussed this kitten’s eye with Dr. Moses AND with an animal ophthalmologist (specialist) who confirm the surgery needs to happen ASAP.

    Original Story – June 3, 2019

I received a phone call from a nice couple that adopted a kitty from me years ago. Since then, they had accumulated 3 more rescue kitties. They are the nicest couple and really care about the cats. Recently some stray cats showed up on their back porch, one by one, until there were FOUR strays begging for food. They, of course, were fed & given clean water on the deck.

A couple of weeks later, one of the skinny adult female cats showed up with FOUR kittens! They were tiny and this couple called me about them. It is so upsetting!!!

Every time I would see pictures of the kittens, they looked worse and worse. Between the heat, the fleas/parasites and trying to nurse on an emaciated mom, they really didn’t stand a chance. One of the kittens started looking like it had an infected eye. At that point, I knew that kitten would die from infection. SO, I went out and trapped the mama cat and grabbed the 4 kittens with my hands. I am trying to make arrangements for the other 3 adult cats to be fixed & vetted. They will, unfortunately, have to be released back at the house, but at least they will have food & water and a complete vetting.

I got the 5 rescues on Thursday night and got them to 4 Seasons on Friday morning.

Mom had never, ever been picked up, or handled really, and as scared to death as she was, she just seemed to know that we were trying to help her. She was very good for the exam, blood testing, shots, etc. I was very very proud of her!

The kittens were all examined also. They are between 3-4 weeks old. One is VERY tiny and three are normal size for that age.

One of the normal sized kittens does have to have his left eye removed once he is old enough for surgery. It is so sad and looks horrible. I can’t stand waiting for the surgery while knowing he is in pain, but he is too little right now. His eye has ruptured and must come out. He is a cute little fuzzy buff boy. We will be needing to raise $$$ during that time to pay for his surgery……

Say a prayer for this family that they all make it and end up healthy and happy. The mama cat seems very grateful and I took a picture of her this morning, with a full belly, relaxed and stretched out while she slept! It was a wonderful thing to see!!!

  • Mary is Adopted!

    Mary is Adopted!

Update April 2020: Mary and Murphy adopted together! Check back soon for more on their adoption story.

Original Post – February 2020 Amazing kitty that only comes along once in a while! Mary was a young mama at only 7-8 months old and took great care of her little ones. Mary is the sweetest cat EVER! Gets along great with other cats and LOVES people! Mary is beautiful, SOOOO soft and laid back as can be! Her 3 youngsters are also available for adoption: 3 little orange and white boys – Murphy, Mikey and Marty.

Mary is especially close with Murphy, so it would mean the world to them to be adopted together!

October 2019 Last night I got a call that gave me a heart attack!  Mama Mary kitty had escaped the foster home!  She had been gone a couple of hours, but I rushed over as soon as I found out.  I called a few FURR friends and we all set out to find her!  It was bad enough that she is a young “unspayed” mama kitty that could easily get pregnant again, but the thought of her getting hit by a car or worse, especially while having 3 little babies, was just more than we could imagine. With flashlights, golf carts and cars, we searched for her in the darkness.  I left at one point and came home to get a trap, some tuna and a crate to put the babies in outside……..anything to lure Mary back to safety and to her babies!Eleanor had come to help, and low and behold, she spotted Mama Mary across the street in some bushes!  Eleanor yelled for me and I ran across the street towards Mary trying not to frighten her.  As I approached her I got down low and talked sweet to her.  When she approached me within arms reach, I grabbed her, scruffed her neck and held her tightly!  She was a bit skittish and I was just wanting to get her inside ASAP before she got loose again!  HOORAY & THANK YOU ELEANOR!!!As it turns out, I decided to bring Mama Mary and her babies to the FURR rescue facility.  The little family is doing great and now I have cats in my office again!  Oh well!  Come and visit this adorable family!  It is worth seeing!I am just thrilled that Mary is safe and sound and that her babies are reunited with her.  Little ones only a couple weeks old need to be fed every four hours!  I’m not sure what in the world we would have done without Mary to feed her babies!  I am just so relieved that everyone is OK!
