FURR took me and as soon as I started getting lots of LOVE, I turned into mush! I am so sweet that you wouldn’t believe it! I will start purring as soon as you look at me! I am a beautiful buff/orange tabby girl with lots of white! I just LOVE to be petted and held! • Hoodie is Adopted!

    Hoodie is Adopted!

June 2021: Good news! Hoodie is adopted!

7-12-2021 Hoodie came to me from a bad part of town in Wilmington called “the Hood”.  She was skinny, alone and going door to door asking for food!  Someone picked her up and took her inside, but could not keep her.  FURR was called and we took Hoodie.  This was a great rescue because Hoodie was extremely grateful and meow’d and purrrrr’d all the time in gratitude!  Hoodie was extremely social right from the beginning and the only thing that I can figure is that she was dumped.
Hoodie became a favorite around FURR and loved to stand up on her hind legs asking to be picked up!  She was super funny and seemed to love everyone:  dogs, people and cats!  There was no doubt that this kitten wouldn’t last long before being adopted.
Again, just like Sake, Hoodie went to good friends of mine in Charlotte that had 2 other FURR cats!  Christine and Mike Wilkins already had adopted from FURR in the past and took my word for it that Hoodie would be a great new addition for their family.  Hoodie was transported to her new home and has been doing great!  Hoodie is loving playing with the Wilkins little girl and being free to run around the house with her new family!  I also miss Hoodie every day!  She was such an amazing little kitty, but all has ended as it should be!

Original story: Absolutely the BEST kitten ever, ever, ever!!! LOVES everybody cats & even our dog! This little girl came from the “hood” in a bad, bad place going door to door looking for FOOD ! A good Samaritan found her & took her inside to keep her safe. She then came to us @ FURR & has been completely vetted, microchipped, etc., and is ready to go her new SAFE lifelong home. I just LOVE this kitten & she is IN YOUR FACE looking for affection! She is AMAZING & new potential owners will be the luckiest folks on earth!!!

    Lilac is Adopted!

2022 Lilac is re-rescued and re-adopted! Check back soon for her adoption story!

April 2021 – Lilac is adopted!

September 2020 – New kitten at FURR! A kitten showed up at the Hampstead colony of cats. I have been trying to catch (trap) it for WEEKS, but it was very feral and would not go near either my regular trap or my drop trap! I stayed out there many nights trying to get it to no avail.

    Lilac-kitten-in-blanket-Sept-2020
    Lilac-kitten-in-blanket-Sept-2020

I finally caught it!!! It was really scared and seemed very very anxious to escape. I was amazed at how BEAUTIFUL this kitten was when I got it up close and personal in the trap. I have NO idea who the father is because this kitten is a lynx point/lilac point Siamese mix with BLUE eyes! The kitten is a girl and I have named her “LILAC”. I took her to get fixed, shots, tested, etc., and she has now recovered well.

She is very healthy and low and behold, she LOVES for me to hold her! Once I got her, handled her every day and fed her regularly, she tamed up amazingly fast! This 5 month old kitten is just DROP DEAD gorgeous! I think she is almost ready to be put up for adoption, but I would like her a little more comfortable first. I am sure she will go FAST! She is very very sweet, purrs to beat the band, but runs if I put her down on the floor. As long as I am holding her and petting her, she is very content.

  • Brevard’s Miraculous Rescue and Adoption Story!

Brevard’s Miraculous Rescue and Adoption Story!

Hold on to your tissues for this one!

BREVARD was only a kitten herself living a horrible life out on her own when she became pregnant. She was probably about 6 months old when she was looking for a quiet, dark, safe place to give birth. She found an abandoned house in Waxhaw, on Brevard Street, and she snuck in there to have her babies. BREVARD was a feral cat, skin and bones, with no regular food, nutrition, water or care of any kind. She was completely on her own.

BREVARD had her kittens in the abandoned house. That SAME day, contractors showed up at the house ready to demolish part of and rebuild the house. The workers tore off part of the flooring and LOW & BEHOLD, there was BREVARD with her newly born babies!

BREVARD took off, scared to death, and the babies were left alone with umbilical cords still attached. I can’t imagine how BREVARD must have felt; exhausted, hungry and completely overwhelmed at having to abandon her new babies.

One of the contractors looked on the Internet and found my number. He was compassionate about saving the little family. I got the call, but I was in Wilmington at the time. I left Wilmington as fast as I could and told him to please watch out for the new born kittens while I traveled about 4 hours to come and get them. Of course, BREVARD was nowhere to be found.

Meanwhile, during my 4 hour trip, another contractor at the site had called animal control. The babies, in his mind, were just a hold up for the work that needed to be done on the house that day. He was not willing to wait 4 hours to have them removed.

Animal Control showed up. The animal control officer took the new born babies. When I called to check in, about half way through my trip, the contractor that had originally contacted me, said that he was sorry, but that the Animal Control guy had taken them. I was just devastated, but continued my trip and immediately called the Animal Control in Wingate. When they answered the phone, they knew the babies that I was speaking from Brevard Streetabout and told me that they had already been euthanized.

    Brevard – Scared Kitty – April 2017

Through flooding tears, I knew what I had to do now. I gave Animal Control AND the officer (who I called) a good piece of my mind. They BOTH knew I was in route, but chose death anyway for those innocent babies. Now, I had to save mama!

I set traps every single day at the house. I would wait until the contractors left and then I would go out and set several traps all around the house. I knew mama would be back to find her babies. I sat out there for all hours of the night and I would see mama. She was lurking around and seemed confused. She was slinking down low to the ground trying to find a way inside the house, but she would give up and run away. She came back night after night while I watched in tears from my car. I just couldn’t imagine her pain.

Finally, after TWO weeks, she went into the trap! Thank you GOD!

I took BREVARD straight to the vet to be checked out, get her shots, deworming, spay surgery and to make sure that she was OK after this birthing. The spay surgery helped her milk dry up faster and removed all of those hormones that cause postpartum depression. BREVARD did well through the surgery and came home to FURR to be cared for and loved……….the best we could seeing that she was EXTREMELY scared and confused.

BREVARD lived at FURR for three years. Over the years, she slowly made progress and would let us pet and love on her. She developed several mouth issues including gingivitis and stomatitis. We had to take her back to the vet for several dental appointments, but over time, most of her teeth were pulled and she finally had a healthy mouth. After that, she actually starting eating really well and became ALMOST a little pudgy!

BREVARD was always scared of new people. She got very comfortable with me because she saw me every day, but our FURR volunteers were relentless in working with her and BREVARD became more and more trusting. She finally raised up her back and tail when being scratched, but the possibility of a “real furrever” home was still slim.

    BUT! MIRACLES do happen!

An amazing couple, who had adopted 2 cats from FURR years before, called me to say that one of their FURR kitties had passed away. They had adopted CANE KITTY and STEFFAN from FURR several years earlier. I will never, ever, ever, ever forget what Lu & Earl said to me when they came to FURR:

Steffan (top) & Cane Kitty (bottom) – Aug 2019

WE WOULD LIKE TO ADOPT 2 KITTIES FROM FURR. WE WANT TO PICK OUT A BEAUTIFUL ONE THAT WE REALLY CONNECT WITH AND WE WOULD LIKE TO RESCUE ONE THAT NEEDS A HOME!

Can you imagine how wonderful those words were to hear? As a rescue person, that just rarely happens. Most adoptions are based on the cat’s looks, personality, age, etc., and hardly ever on the fact that some cats just need a home in the worst way! These cats are NOT the most trusting, the most beautiful or the youngest………….they are the most desperate & deserving ones. So, Earl and Lu took Steffan and Cane Kitty home. Cane Kitty had been rescued by me at Cane Creek Park. I had received a call that there were a bunch of feral cats living out a the park and that campers were feeding them. Someone complained and animal control went out and trapped & killed ALL of the feral cats………all but one that they couldn’t catch. By the time I got the news about these cats, it was too late, but I went out there anyway and sure enough, ONE kitty was left that they couldn’t catch. I waited for days with my special drop trap and finally got her. I can tell you another entire story about Cane Kitty and all that she went through, but the main thing is that she DID get adopted & lived a wonderful life with Earl & Loucinda! Cane Kitty was in her late teens when she passed away.

    Brevard’s new home awaits! – Dec 2020

Now, Lucinda & Earl have taken a second kitty from FURR just because it needed a home! Mike and I drove BREVARD up to Charlotte to her new & furrever home! I cried my eyes out (again!) because of how happy I was for BREVARD!

BREVARD is doing really well and Steffan (their other FURR kitty) has met her a few times. BREVARD is in the perfect home where Lu and Earl are taking a quiet & slow approach to her living with them. Progress is eminent and this couple is amazing! I want to clone them! I am sending a few pictures of BREVARD in her new home. I miss her so much because I spent 3 years taking care of her and she is a part of my heart. I am so grateful that this is a happy ending for this kitty……………there are just no words good enough to thank Lu and Earl for their compassion, care and dedication to these cats. They are the real heros!!!

    Isn’t this a wonderful story!

  • Sake is Adopted!

    Sake is Adopted!

June 2021: Good news! Sake is Adopted!

7-12-21 SAKE was adopted by my good friend, Bobbi Marr, in Monroe, NC.  Bobbi has adopted SEVERAL FURR cats in the past and had recently lost one of her FURR cats to cancer.  It was a very sad passing, but Bobbi wanted to offer a new life to another rescued kitty.  Bobbi came and stayed with me one weekend and she fell in love with SAKE.
SAKE came to me from Charlotte extremely feral, scared and injured.  She had to have 2 surgeries to correct her prolapsed rectum, but healed up beautifully.  SAKE slowly, but surely, learned how things work at FURR!  She was going to be petted and loved on whether she wanted it or not!  She would also learn to cohabitate with all the other rescued kitties and learn that socialization was a fun thing.  SAKE became ready for adoption after several months of rehab at FURR and everyone just fell in love with her…….including Bobbi!
Bobbi took SAKE home and it was pretty much an instant success.  Bobbi has a lot of experience in introducing cats, being patient with new or frightened cats and reading the cat’s behavior to know when ready to the next step.  SAKE just loves Bobbi, sleeps with her and plays with all the other kitties.  Bobbi tells me how they play and chase each other around the house.  It is just music to my ears that this is such a great home for SAKE.  She is so beautiful and Bobbi is the lucky one that gets to look at her and feel her soft fur every day!  I miss SAKE every day!

Original Story: December of 2020 I received a desperate call from a well-known cat lady named Marilyn. She said that someone had trapped a cat and had brought it to her. The cat was extremely feral and was living behind a Japanese restaurant in Charlotte. Marilyn took the cat in and realized that it had some medical issues. It had a prolapsed rectum! Poor skinny, scared, feral kitty was living a rough life outside AND with a horrible medical issue!

Sake in the trap – Dec 2020

Marilyn got the cat to the vet and they managed to get the rectum back in place, but the kitty, “SAKE”, needed rest, meds, etc……but, Marilyn had trouble handling the cat and she asked me to please take it and work with it. I agreed, but she had trouble trying to get SAKE into a carrier. She had SAKE in her bathroom. Finally SAKE got into the carrier and the trapper drove from Charlotte to bring SAKE to me. I met him about an hour outside of Wilmington and picked her up.

The trapper of the cat was a really nice man and he has stayed in touch with me about SAKE. He told me that he had been the one to trap SAKE, taken her to the vet to get her spayed & to fix her prolapse, but when he went to pick her up after her surgery, she ESCAPED outside!!! She had just had surgery! After two weeks of trying, he was able to trap her again, thank goodness, but he delivered her to Marilyn. Now, she is probably really traumatized.
SO, now I have SAKE. I was very intrigued with this little kitty. She was DROP DEAD GORGEOUS and about a year old. BUT, she was very scared & hissed like crazy! All you had to do was look her way, and she would spit on and hiss at you!

I got SAKE home and I just sort of experimented with her. When I picked her up and held her really snug up against my chest, she kind of settled in. She took a deep breath, hissed a couple of times, but then she was ok with it. I temporarily put her in a cage so that I could handle her often. She warmed up quickly to my touch, my feeding her and to being brushed.

However, during the stress of moving AGAIN to a new place, the rectum prolapsed again! YIKES! I had only had her a few days when this happened again.

I had to rush her to the emergency vet. They had to do surgery this time, put the rectum back in place, stitch her up and put her on some heavy duty antibiotics, etc. She came back to FURR the next day and I had to care for her. She healed up beautifully this time and has had no problems since her 2 week recovery.

SAKE is now running around with all the other cats at FURR. She is very playful and lets me handle her with no problems! She is really sweet and grateful. She purrrrrrs now and rolls around when I am petting her! She really has taken to me, and gets along with the other cats fine, but would probably do just fine also as an only kitty.

SAKE is completely healthy now. She is still shy when meeting new people, but it doesn’t take her long to trust them. All it takes is a little time and patience. She will be a wonderful cat for someone that can be quiet around her and give her time to adjust. She actually looks like a miniature Ragdoll kitty. Her eyes are ridiculously BLUE and her long hair is silky soft. Her coloring is just gorgeous. SAKE will always be a tiny kitty. I doubt she will ever weight must more than 6 or 7 pounds. She is AMAZING and I have just loved working with her!!!

  • Amelia & Caddie adopted!

    Amelia & Caddie adopted!

    Caddie

April 2021 Caddie & Amelia are adopted! Caddie and Amelia were the 2 kittens that I adopted out a couple of years ago to a young couple that I believed in. Unfortunately, the couple proved me wrong and after having a baby, decided to dump their 2 beloved cats……of course they are now adults and much harder to find homes for.

The cats have been in a temporary foster home.

LIZ, a long time FURR volunteer, had adopted a FURR kitty, “CLEO”, to keep her kitty, “MING” company. Sadly, MING passed away recently and we certainly know how hard that is to say goodbye to our beloved family……we are so sorry Liz. But, LIZ decided to give CADDIE a try to give Cleo a friend! She took in CADDIE and slowly but surely, CADDIE and CLEO are getting along and Liz has become quite attached to CADDIE and has decided to adopt her!

I am sooooo excited that now CADDIE has, what I know will be, a permanent loving home! Thank you Liz! Some people just don’t understand what that means. Our beloved cats are NOT disposable.

These pictures are great & we all with Liz, Caddie & Cleo a very long and happy life together!

Original Story in 2020 – Three years ago a young, newly married couple adopted one of my kittens. They had rescued a kitten that needed a friend, so I adopted “CADDIE” to them. They really wanted CADDIE to be a friend to their cat AMELIA, who was the same age as CADDIE.

CADDIE was one of the kittens born to SUN CITY KITTY MAMA………..

Now, three years later, the two cats are 3 years old and the couple now live in a home that will NOT allow any pets in the house. CADDIE & AMELIA are both in a small bathroom. I am thankful that they are still alive, but this is a horrible situation for the cats. I have been just devastated over it. It is quite difficult to find adult cats a home, much less two cats.

Both cats are very sweet. Please help any way you can to spread the word for these two beautiful cats who unfortunately need to move from the only place they have ever known.

    Amelia

FURR will do anything to keep the two, very attached, cats together.

THIS IS URGENT TO SAY THE LEAST. I am still afraid that these cats will be dropped off at animal control if we do not find a FOSTER HOME or PERMANENT HOME SOON!!!
