Our Volunteer, Kate, is fighting for the lives of her two kitties when they simply touched lily pollen! Here is their story –

My mom sent me flowers for my birthday – lilies. I thought they were beautiful, but my cousin said they were toxic to cats, so I put them in my bedroom, which I usually keep closed off to the cats.

I was spending time with my girls yesterday and I left my bedroom door open, not thinking about the flowers. While I was eating lunch, Party and Addie went into my room and got up close with the flowers. They were sniffing them and got pollen on them. Party walked up to me right after and I saw a big smudge of pollen on her face. I immediately wiped it off and looked up lilies. I had no idea how poisonous they are to cats! They can cause kidney failure within 24 hours of not treated immediately.

Within 5 minutes I was on the phone with the emergency vet who guided me to reach out to the poison control line. They told me to take them to the vet ER immediately. I immediately called and texted Terry asking her to come help me get the kitties into their carriers. Terry immediately dropped everything and came over. She was able to get them in their carriers in 2 minutes – a miracle!! I couldn’t have done it without her!!!

I got the kitties to the hospital within 1 hour of interaction of the flowers. They immediately took them back and checked both of them out. They sedated them (Party first since she had the most pollen on her), and then bathed them, took blood work, gave them medicine to help them throw up (didn’t work) and hooked them up to an IV.

They hit the 24 hour mark at 4:30 today. Blood was drawn at 3 and both of their kidney levels are normal so far. They will be in the ER for 72 hours, getting blood drawn every 6 hours. Tonight at 9 is the next blood draw. I’m praying for my kitties. They are my babies, my everything. Please share this and ask for everyone’s prayers and healing thoughts!!

Aug. 3, 2026 Good news – Friends of Felines has agreed to hold on to him and FURR has agreed to sponsor his care until his lice treatment is completed. Whew! It takes a village!

Aug. 2, 2026 – We’re running out of time! We need a temp (6 week) foster TODAY! Please share with others!

July 31, 2026 URGENT! BY SUNDAY, 8/2, I need a temporary (6 week) foster for a Trap-Neuter-Release cat we caught that has lice! This condition is absolutely *not* contagious to dogs or people but highly contagious to cats! We need someone with a spare room or a bathroom where I can set up a cage away from cats.

URGENT! This cat is in horrible shape and needs to be medicated (which Terry will do) once every 2 weeks for 6 weeks before he is released back into his colony. If he is released now, he will suffer and he will spread his lice to all the other cats in the colony!

PLEEEEASE HELP! FURR will provide food, litter, medication, cage, blankets and everything needed. Terry can also come to feed him and clean litter once a day if he is in the Hampstead area.

All you have to do is provide the space!

Please note that space in a garage *must* be air conditioned.

April 12, 2026 Great news! Look for the following article about Marty appears in the April 2026 issue of PAWPRINTS MAGAZINE with the before & after pictures (above):

“I am MARTY.  I have survived the impossible!  When FURR was finally able to catch me (after a long & patient 6 weeks), I was BROKEN!  FURR helped me come back to life!  I was injured, feral, skin & bones, frightened, hurting & bitter.  I have had 3 surgeries, medications and more love than I ever knew.  My leg was broken, my eyes were infected, I wasn’t neutered, I was COVERED in fleas & anemic AND my teeth were broken, rotten or falling out.  My ears were almost chewed completely off.  I was BROKEN!

A miracle occurred.  Instead of being euthanized, FURR saw hope!  I had eye surgery, neuter surgery & dental surgery.  I have been made whole again & I have come to see the good in people that love me!  I am fat, shiney & loving!  Give me scratches and treats and the joy I will give you back is immeasurable!

I am looking for that special person that wants ONE cat (ME!) since I now am the submissive kitty in the rescue.  If I can now be healthy, sweet and whole again, don’t I deserve the best love out there?

It’s me, ya’ll.  Im MARTY…. the broken cat that is now  whole again!

Jan. 28, 2026 Update on MARTY! HE is doing fantastic!  I sent a picture of his eyes to the specialist vet & she was very pleased!

I really think MARTY is happier now that he can see better!  He doesn’t flinch as much when I’m touching him and he just seems to be in a better happier state!

Of course, he is on pain meds for a few days, so that can’t hurt.  He takes his meds like a champ.

Jan. 27, 2026 EYE SURGERY SUCCESSFUL! The vet said it went very well! MARTY was a trooper the whole time. I had to give him a pill early this am to sedate him a little bit per the vet’s request. I was able to pill him with ease. He trusts me so much now, that he cooperates with any of my requests!

I took him in early for surgery (no problems whatsoever with loading him in a carrier or riding in the car!) I talked with him during the car ride just to try to ease his mind. He never made a peep.

I picked him up later today & the surgery was over & went well, but MARTY was still sedated. I couldn’t see his eyes because he was sleeping.

This evening he was more alert, ate his dinner & took a pain pill I gave him with no hesitation. He eyes were partially open & looked a little reddish & swollen. The vet told me it would be a few days before he would look normal.

I will send before & after pics in a few days.

Jan. 25, 2026 FUNDRAISER for MARTY’s EYE SURGERY $1,200! MARTY is having eye surgery! Last week I took him to the animal eye specialist and she agreed that surgery would help him see better. It will also make him a lot more handsome, even though I think he is adorable just the way he is!

MARTY’S 3rd eyelids do not retract and we don’t know why. It could be from his many fights & injuries. It inhibits his sight because the 3rd eyelids are always up.

There was an opening on the surgery schedule for this MONDAY, Jan 26th, so I scheduled him for then! (Hope the weather holds out)

Im excited to be able to help him see better! His surgery plus office visit will run about $1,200.

I will follow up with everyone after his surgery!

Say a little prayer for MARTY that surgery goes well & fixes another part of his poor broken down body!

Sept. 9, 2025 Watch this video of MARTY last night showing his progress!

Today, I picked him up after his dental surgery surgery to address his many broken teeth, roots exposed, hurtful gums, etc.. 

Today the Vet gave me some major news about Marty’s ordeal before his rescue.

MARTY has been SHOT at least 3 times in his legs!  He had THIRTEEN teeth removed & 3 of those were major extractions (broken & painful canines!), he has a left ankle that has been injured, calcified & immobile.  All of this that happened to this cat PLUS chewed off ears (or frost bitten), torn 3rd eyelids in both eyes limiting his sight slightly, scars everywhere (dr Rockwell said she shaved his leg to put in an IV, and it was all scar tissue!) AND he is somehow alive!!!

I have NO idea what im going to do with him, but whatever it is, he will be better off than he was!

Pray for MARTY’S recovery.  Very similar to GORDON’s story, Marty is now needs huge-hearted, selfless adopter, like Heather, to take him in!

Aug. 29, 2025 A feral cat has been frequenting the back yard of FURR.  My horrible & blurry ADT cameras showed a cat lurking around, but nothing was clear.  About 6-8 weeks ago, i set up a trap to try to catch it.

The cat seemed VERY feral & leary of the trap.  I tied the trap open & put food near it.  As the cat continued to eat the food, I slowly moved the food further & further into the trap.

Interestingly enough, if i moved the food more than an inch at the time, the cat wouldnt show up for a couple of days!  Smart kitty….very observant.  

Finally, after weeks of putting out food & tuna EVERY night, i finally set the trap to go off & i got him!

Thank goodness!  This kitty was a MESS!

It turns out that this was one of 2 feral cats a lady had fed for years.  She lived down the road from FURR, but left & moved back to Maryland leaving the 2 cats alone. I found out that it wasn’t because she didnt care about them.  She couldn’t catch them!  She had several rescue groups all attempt to catch the 2 cats, but no luck.

Well, I now have “Marty” in my care.

Feb, 1, 2026 Ensure your kitty cannot ingest string, cords, or other dangerous household materials – see list below! Please read and share this important reminder

A client of mine that adopted a cat from FURR, has had a harrowing experience accidentally eating fishing line!

When I adopt out cats, I try to cover a LOT of information, but sometimes it is an overwhelming amount of data. I try to explain one thing for sure:

NEVER, EVER allow any cat access to the following:

Blind cords

String of any kind

Yarn

Thread

Hair ties

Rubber bands

Filament

Etc.

All of these things are extremely fun for cats to play with & extremely dangerous for them to play with.

My client has some fishing line inside the house. Supposedly the fishing line was out of reach.

When a couple inches of fishing line was seen sticking out of the cat’s mouth, a trip to the animal ER was eminent.

NEVER try to pull on the string or line sticking out (of either end of the cat!) Let the ER vet handle. Severe damage can be done to the cat’s organs if you try to pull it out!!!

After this horrible incident and $1,000 bill at the ER, it was determined that nothing could be done except wait to see if the line would pass. If the line didnt get passed within a day or so, exploratory surgery was next.

After many tears and prayers, and THREE days of waiting, the cat passed an enormous amount of fishing line in his poop!

This is truly an act of GOD for this much line to feed through the cat’s body without wrapping around & getting hung up on his organs!

Folks, ive seen a lot of things with cat rescue, but I have never seen a cat successfully pass this amount of line (or string) without surgery.

BEWARE! LOOK AROUND YOUR HOUSE & PLEASE KEEP YOUR PRECIOUS CATS SAFE!
